British health chief dubbed "minister for magic''

(AP) ? He supports homeopathy, a practice that many experts liken to snake oil. He opposes late-term abortion, falling afoul of this mostly pro-choice nation. During the London Olympics, he offended many Britons with a jab at the cherished National Health Service.

This is Jeremy Hunt ? Britain's new health minister. He's only been in his job since Tuesday, but already some experts fret that his controversial views and general knack for inviting scandal could sow confusion in an already fragile health system.

Hunt's personal beliefs shouldn't influence policy because his job will mostly be to implement reforms that have already been agreed. Still, British media slammed Hunt's appointment, mainly basing their criticism on his support of homeopathy. The Telegraph newspaper headline read: "Jeremy Hunt as Health Secretary: Are you kidding?" The magazine New Scientist labeled him "the new minister for magic."

And medical views aside, the 45-year-old Conservative ally of Prime Minister David Cameron has already developed an image as a magnet for controversy ? notably during his just-completed stint as minister for media, culture and sport.

In that job, he was criticized for maintaining close ties to Rupert Murdoch even as a phone hacking scandal engulfed the media tycoon. Opposition lawmakers said Hunt, whose office had jurisdiction over Murdoch's ambitions to take over a TV station, should face a government inquiry. Hunt's adviser Adam Smith resigned after the contacts between Murdoch's News Corp. and the minister's office were disclosed.

Some had expected Hunt to be demoted after the scandal. But in his first major Cabinet shakeup, Cameron gave Hunt another high-profile job instead.

In announcing the Cabinet changes, Cameron said ministers would be expected to focus on implementing policies that have already been approved in Parliament, meaning that Hunt will likely be on a short leash.

Hunt allies defended the selection.

"Jeremy Hunt is perfectly well-qualified to do the job," said Stephen Dorrell, a Conservative Party member of Parliament and chair of Parliament's Health Select Committee. "He understands the concerns people have, he's an excellent communicator and he will focus on making sure the government delivers on its objectives."

Dorrell, who was health secretary between 1995 and 1997, said it was unfair to criticize Hunt for signing a Parliamentary motion five years ago in support of homeopathy. "I think if you dig far back enough into everybody's history, you can always find something like that," he said, rejecting fears that government policy on homeopathy would change.

Hunt joined Parliament in 2005 after setting up an educational publishing company and a charity helping AIDS orphans in Africa. He inherits the health portfolio at a time of radical restructuring in the National Health Service. His predecessor introduced a new health bill opposed by every major medical group but was ultimately approved by Parliament. The changes will axe about 20,000 jobs while transferring greater powers to clinics.

Hunt's most recent gaffe was questioning whether the country's health service, the NHS, deserved to get a tribute in the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. Cameron reportedly overruled him.

In 2005, Hunt co-authored a book that concluded that the NHS was no longer relevant and it should no longer be run by the government.

Scientists are more worried about his backing for homeopathy.

"This is a jump back into the last century," said Edzard Ernst, an emeritus professor at Exeter University. "We need someone who believes in science and evidence for a health secretary, and that is not compatible with believing in homeopathy.

"This is a bad omen for things to come."

Many scientists view homeopathy as modern day quack medicine. It relies on highly diluted drugs made from natural ingredients. The U.S. government has stopped paying for studies of homeopathic treatments, saying there's little evidence any of them work. A government website notes homeopathy is based on concepts that are inconsistent with the fundamentals of chemistry and physics.

In 2007, Hunt signed a motion welcoming the "positive contribution made to the health of the nation" by homeopathy and called for the government to actively support it. In response to a constituent who pointed out that homeopathy doesn't work, Hunt replied it should be available because thousands of people use it and the government insists health care should be "patient-led."

Sir Paul Nurse, president of the Royal Society, Britain's leading independent scientific academy, said he was hopeful Hunt might change his mind about homeopathy. "It could be that in his new position he will read more thoroughly," he said. "If we are to make the case for evidence-based medicine, then there shouldn't be any homeopathy."

A 2010 report from a House of Commons science committee recommended the government stop paying for homeopathy. But the department of health leaves decisions on treatments to hospitals, meaning the government continues to pay for some homeopathic remedies. Homeopathic treatments account for less than one percent of Britain's drug costs.

Experts say that homeopathic remedies are mostly prescribed for people with chronic problems like pain or fatigue, where the treatments may seem to work because of the placebo effect. Practitioners who use alternative remedies often spend more time listening to patients, which can help them feel better.

The questionable treatments are backed by celebrities including Paul McCartney, David Beckham and Jude Law. In 2005, Prince Charles commissioned a report on homeopathy which said treating patients with homeopathy could cut the nation's drugs bill in half. Experts said that would put patients' lives in danger.

Women's groups are concerned about Hunt's track record on abortion. In 2008, Hunt voted for the limit to be halved to 12 weeks from the current 24. The motion was thrown out, but experts say Hunt's position was troubling.

"About 80 percent of the country is pro-choice but unfortunately Jeremy Hunt is not one of those people," Kate Smurthwaite, vice-chair of Abortion Rights, an advocacy group. "We hold out hope he's going to take the job seriously and put his personal views aside to get on with the job, but to have him as health minister is incredibly worrying."

Cilic ends Nishikori's bid at US Open

Asian hopes for a Grand Slam singles crown at the US Open ended Saturday as Croatian 12th seed Marin Cilic ousted Japanese 17th seed Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (3/7), 6-3 to reach the last 16.

Cilic, whose eight career titles include crowns this year at Queen's and Umag, advanced to a fourth-round match against the winner of a later match between French 32nd seed Jeremy Chardy and Slovakia's Martin Klizan.

"I served well. I think that was the key," Cilic said. "He played really well in the tie-breaker. We both had a lot of chances in the match."

Nishikori failed to match his best US Open run into fourth round from 2008, when he was beaten by Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro, who also beat him in last month's Olympic quarter-finals.

Nishikori's best Grand Slam run was into the quarter-finals at this year's Australian Open, where he lost to Andy Murray, who also ended Cilic's best Slam run in the 2010 Australian Open semi-finals.

Cilic pulled even in their career rivalry, having won their first meeting in the first round at Indian Wells in 2008 but lost in a gruelling five-setter in the second round of the 2010 US Open and again last year in Chennai.

Nishikori, the highest-ranked man in Japanese tennis history, won his only ATP title in 2008 at Delray Beach in only his sixth tour start.

Cilic, 23, won the first seven points of the match. Nishikori hit a forehand wide to surrender a break in the second game, missed a break chance in the third and two more in the seventh before dropping the first set in 43 minutes.

"It was really crucial to start the match like that," Cilic said. "Kei played really well. We both had a lot of chances."

Nishikori, who retired in the first round at last year's US Open with a back injury, was broken at love in the ninth game of the second set and Cilic then held at love to seize command of the match.

But Nishikori, 22, battled into a third-set tie-breaker and dominated it, winning six of the last seven points to claim the 82-minute set when Cilic sent a backhand wide.

Nishikori denied Cilic on a break chance in the second game of the fourth set but Cilic broke with a forehand winner for a 3-1 lead and held serve to the finish for the victory after three hours and 33 minutes.

S. Williams, Federer ease into US Open's 4th round

(AP) ? Serena Williams does not enjoy viewing videos of her losses. Not one bit.

She used to engage in that sort of film work, Williams said, but "it was so painful; it was like stabbing myself."

So even though Williams knew her third-round opponent at the U.S. Open would be the same woman she lost to at the Australian Open, preparing by studying a replay of that January defeat simply was out of the question.

Did not seem to matter at all.

After splitting Saturday's first eight games against 42nd-ranked Ekaterina Makarova of Russia, the fourth-seeded Williams got into high gear and breezed to a 6-4, 6-0 victory, reeling off the last eight games in a row.

"Definitely was motivated. Knowing that I lost; could definitely happen again. Did not want that to happen," said Williams, who hit 13 aces to raise her tour-leading total this season to 408.

"I really hate watching matches that I lose, unless I'm punishing myself," added the 14-time Grand Slam champion. "I didn't punish myself."

She hasn't been losing much lately.

Since the only first-round Grand Slam exit of her career, against 111th-ranked Virginie Razzano at the French Open on May 29, Williams is 22-1 in singles, including the title at Wimbledon and gold medal at the London Olympics.

That sort of excellence sure saves money for clothes: Williams said she threw out all of the dresses she brought to Paris to wear during matches there.

No such problems so far in New York, where Williams has dropped only 12 games entering her fourth-round match against 82nd-round Andrea Hlavackova of Czech Republic. Hlavackova, the 2011 French Open doubles champion, bawled on court after her 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win over 14th-seeded Maria Kirilenko, whose boyfriend, Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin, was in New York to cheer for her.

The woman Williams beat in the Wimbledon final, second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, dealt with the 90-degree heat and former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic with equal aplomb during a 6-3, 7-5 victory.

"I was melting there," Radwanska said. "I survived the match."

She wasn't the only one who felt that way.

Olympic champion Andy Murray, still seeking his first Grand Slam title after four losses in finals, eked out a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4) victory over No. 30 Feliciano Lopez, who led in each of the three tiebreakers before faltering.

"Could have gone either way," Murray acknowledged. "It was very hot and humid in the middle part of the match. I was struggling a bit with that."

The man he beat for the gold at the Summer Games, and lost to in the Wimbledon title match, Roger Federer, is also Murray's potential semifinal opponent in New York. Federer, as is often the case, barely was bothered Saturday while dismissing No. 25 Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Five of Federer's record 17 Grand Slam titles came at Flushing Meadows, and he's sure looking capable of adding to those numbers.

"He didn't give me many chances with his serve," observed Verdasco, who held only one break point and failed to convert it.

Federer also was pretty good at the net, winning 26 of the 27 points when he moved forward. He next will take on No. 16 Gilles Simon or No. 23 Mardy Fish. They were due on court Saturday night, after former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic overcame a poor start, 56 unforced errors and a partisan crowd to beat 19-year-old American Sloane Stephens 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2. Ivanovic also eliminated Stephens in the third round at Flushing Meadows a year ago.

Murray gets No. 15 Milos Raonic, who hit his 29th ace of the day, and 89th of the week, to cap a 6-3, 6-0, 7-6 (3) victory against 32-year-old American wild-card entry James Blake.

Other men winning Saturday included No. 11 Nicolas Almagro, who ended the run of 19-year-old American Jack Sock 7-6 (3), 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-1 and now will play 2010 Wimledon runner-up Tomas Berdych, a four-set winner over No. 27 Sam Querrey; No. 12 Marin Cilic, who defeated No. 17 Kei Nishikori; and 50th-ranked Martin Klizan of Slovakia, who beat No. 32 Jeremy Chardy.

On Saturday against Makarova, things were even at 4-all in the first set, before Williams held serve to go up 5-4. In the next game, Williams broke the left-handed Makarova for the first time to take the opening set and seize control in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

At 15-all, Williams hit a backhand winner down the line. Then she earned a set point with big forehand to a corner that allowed her to put away a swinging backhand volley winner. And when Makarova pushed a down-the-line forehand long to cap the set, Williams let out a loud, excited yell of "Come on!"

Beginning to put the match out of reach, Williams got another break point the next time Makarova served with a reflex forehand volley passing shot off an overhead, and followed up with a strong backhand approach that her opponent couldn't handle. That made it 2-0 in the second set, and Williams' older sister, seven-time major champion Venus, applauded from her seat in the stands.

In all, Williams won 32 of 40 points on her serve and never faced a break point.

By the time it was over, she also held a 31-10 edge in winners, moving a step closer to adding a fourth U.S. Open trophy to the ones she won in 1999, 2002 and 2008.

The last time these two women played each other, it wasn't close, either. The difference, surprisingly, was that Makarova won 6-2, 6-3 in the fourth round in Melbourne. She got plenty of help from seven double-faults and 37 total unforced errors by Williams, who joked that day, "Maybe I should have started serving lefty."

That loss remains the only one for Williams in 22 Grand Slam matches against lefties.

"She served so much better than she did in Australia. So when she's serving that good, it's really tough to play against her," Makarova said. "I knew she would start aggressive, because that's how it is anytime she loses and she really wants to beat someone."

After Saturday's victory in the rematch, Williams, who turns 31 this month, was asked during an on-court interview about decisions by her contemporaries Andy Roddick, 30, and Kim Clijsters, 29, to quit professional tennis after the U.S. Open.

"I'm nowhere near close to retiring," Williams replied, drawing a roar of approval from the crowd. "I can't leave you guys. I love this sport way too much, and now that Andy and Kim are done, I feel that I need to stay out here for the tennis. I'm not going anywhere."

Clijsters is.

The four-time major champion and former No. 1-ranked player headed into retirement after she and Bob Bryan lost their second-round mixed doubles match against Makarova and Bruno Soares. Clijsters announced months ago the U.S. Open would be her last tournament, and she already was out of singles and women's doubles.

Clijsters bid adieu to the sport with her husband and 4-year-old daughter sitting in the stands at Court 17.

"I've been telling her I'm going to be home a lot when this tournament is completely done," Clijsters said. "I don't think she understands the meaning of the word 'retirement.'"
