(AP) ? Stocks eked out small gains on Wall Street following more signs that the U.S. economic recovery is advancing, albeit at a slow pace.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 11 points at 13,183 as of 3 p.m. Wednesday. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index rose three points at 1,407, and the Nasdaq composite rose 13 points to 3,030.

U.S. industrial production increased last month as factories made more cars, computers and airplanes, according to the Federal Reserve.

It was a sign that manufacturing is recovering after a weak spring. Also, consumer prices were unchanged in July from June, as a small drop in energy costs offset slightly higher food prices. The consumer price index hasn't changed since March, which means that inflation is in check.

Lower inflation gives the Federal Reserve more leeway to launch new programs intended to rekindle the economy. The Fed signaled at a meeting in late July that it is ready to act if growth and hiring stays weak.

Recent signs point to some economic improvement in July. Employers created the most jobs in five months, while consumers spent a little more at stores after three months of declines. Though they were better, the economic data showed a very weak recovery and that the U.S. economy is just trudging along.

"We're in a period of very slow growth, though interest rates are low, and very little inflation," said David Kotok, chief investment officer at Cumberland Advisors.

Many investors wonder if the economy is fragile enough to create a sense of urgency among policy makers to act proactively. The slightly better outlook for the economy could prompt the Fed to hold off on taking action when its policy committee next meets in September.

The bond market is betting that the Fed is not likely to act. Investors have been selling low-risk U.S. government bonds, sending the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note up to 1.80 percent Wednesday. That's up from 1.73 percent Tuesday and 1.66 percent late Monday.

"Unless the U.S. economy goes into a swoon and there is no pick up in retail sales and deterioration in jobs growth or major shocks from Europe and China, the Fed will not take any action for now," Kotok said.

In the last few weeks of the summer, trading volumes in the stock market have been low. Investors may also be holding off on taking aggressive positions ahead of a meeting of the U.S. Federal Reserve in Wyoming at the end of this month.

On Wednesday, the Dow traded within a range of just 54 points.

U.S. earnings were mixed.

Target rose $1.22 to $64.60 after the retailer reported earnings that beat analysts' expectations and raised its profit forecast for the year. Target is preparing its first expansion out of the U.S., into Canada.

Deere plummeted $4.63 to $75.50 after the agriculture machinery maker reported results that were well below Wall Street's expectations. The company attributed its poor results to a slowing global economy and the effects of a prolonged U.S. drought. Deere also cut its revenue forecast for the year.

Staples dropped $2 to $11.45 after the office and school supplies store said its income dropped 32 percent following weak sales in North America and Europe. The results fell short of analysts' expectations and the company cut its full-year earnings forecast.

Abercrombie & Fitch struggled to sell its preppy jeans and T-shirts in the previous quarter, but its results weren't as bad as analysts had forecast. The teen fashion leader also laid out plans for updating its fashions. The stock soared 9 percent, or $2.80, to $35.13.

Ancient Times With Tudor Doors | Home Improvement

Sometimes a house could really use a increase, and all that is needed is a significantly different entrance than what it may have now. A Tudor design entrance can really help your house be pop, but it may be a wise decision to do some analysis first on the various looks that a Tudor entrance can have, as well as whether or not it will capable well with your house.

Tudor design gates generally go with houses of the same structural design. Basically, individuals have taken the looks and styles of medieval houses from the 1500s and reinvented them to match their needs of these days. Sometimes these houses are also known as Ancient Rebirth houses. They go over a variety of styles as well since there were many to select from during that interval frame. You may see Tudor gates with small bungalows or you may see them as the gateways to luxurious castles. Typically Tudor styles function extreme homes, the real gables and parapets, as well as structures being created with stone or stonework, and high, filter windows.

The Tudor entrance tends to replicate the indoor and outdoor of the houses through the use of attractive cup and curved design. Indeed, you?ll discover that almost every Tudor entrance functions an posture design at the top, whether or not the entrance itself is actually curved. Doors can function several sections that are either created entirely of wooden or cup. Wood can be whatever you like, though most individuals that deeper wooden with a bulkier look tends to go with the medieval overall look they are looking for. This does not mean you are needed to adhere to in their actions, but you should take these factors into consideration when selecting your own entrance and the type of look you wish to provide individuals as they get into your house.

Talk to entrance professionals about Tudor gates and how they can be proved helpful into your house design. It may also help to give them images of your house so they can see if any changes need to be created to the real entry to be able to provide the entrance of your option. Take your some time to energy in making a decision because, after all, this is going to be the entrance that everyone walking through before coming into your house, and one of the first things individuals observe as they look at your house. You will want the entrance to be something that you really like to see whenever you go back house, no issue whether it is from work or from a long holiday.

How makers of phones and tablets are faring

Many companies including Nokia and Research in Motion have been struggling to compete with Apple and manufacturers of devices running Google's Android software. That shows in some of the earnings reports released so far for the latest quarter.

Here's a look at how makers of phones and tablet computers are doing:

? July 10: BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. asks disgruntled investors at a shareholders meeting for patience as it develops new devices to rival the iPhone and Android smartphones. The company reiterates a warning that the next several quarters will be challenging. It also expects to report another operating loss in the current quarter, which ends Sept. 1, as the company cuts prices to sell its older BlackBerry models.

? July 19: Nokia Corp. says its net loss nearly quadrupled in the second quarter on sagging sales of smartphones, which fell 39 percent from a year ago to 10.2 million. The company's stock jumped, however, as sales of low-end phones buoyed revenue and shipments of the new Lumia phones, which run on Windows software and will replace the older smartphone models, were not as bad as feared. In North America, sales of the Lumia phones offset declines in traditional Symbian devices.

Google Inc., which completed its purchase of Motorola Mobility during the quarter, says it saw strengths in North America with Verizon Wireless, driven by the Razr Maxx device. But it says international sales of basic cellphones and mid-tier smartphones declined. Google reiterates that 1 million new Android devices from various phone makers are being activated each day, with more than 400 million activated worldwide.

? July 24: Apple Inc. says it sold 26 million iPhones, 28 percent more than a year ago. It also sold 17 million iPads, an 84 percent increase and a quarterly record. But average selling prices for both products were down.

? July 25: LG Electronics reports a lower quarterly profit as its mobile phone division sank to a loss. Basic handset sales declined while expenses to promote its new smartphones went up. The company says profitability at the mobile communication business will not be too bad for the rest of the year with new high-end mobile device launches due in North America and Japan. But it stops short of guiding investors on when the company can fully turn around its mobile business

? July 27: Samsung Electronics Co. reports another record-high quarterly profit as customers flocked to Galaxy smartphones. Samsung benefited as rivals including Apple had yet to release new models. The performance in mobile phones helped offset a slowdown in other consumer electronics businesses such as televisions.

IDC reports that Samsung has extended its lead over Apple in smartphones. Samsung had a market share of 33 percent in the second quarter, up from 17 percent a year ago. Apple's fell slightly to 17 percent, from 19 percent a year ago. The drop is typical several months after the release of a new iPhone model.

? Aug. 2: Sony Corp. says revenue in its mobile division more than doubled, but that's largely because it took full ownership of Sony Mobile, once a joint venture with LM Ericsson. Had the transaction been reflected in the year-ago quarter, growth would have been about 14 percent. Sony says more people have been buying smartphones rather than the cheaper, basic phones. It's also sold more smartphones, mostly because of strong performance of Xperia S and Xperia acro HD.

? Aug. 3: Taiwan smartphone maker HTC Corp. reports a 58 percent drop in profit, its third consecutive quarterly decline as intensifying competition from Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. hurt sales. The company had hoped to win back some of its market with the launch of "HTC One" series, which offers users a better camera and music experience. But following the huge popularity of Samsung's Galaxy handsets, the model's key U.S. carrier, AT&T, recently slashed the prices of "HTC One" by half. HTC says the U.S. will continue to be an important market, but that China "will be a key driving force for our future growth."

? Aug. 8: Research group IDC says the success of Samsung's Android phones helped Google's operating system extend its dominance in the smartphone market. There were four Android phones for every iPhone shipped in the second quarter, up from a ratio of 2.5 to 1 in the same period last year. The gains come largely at the expense of BlackBerry phones made by Research in Motion Ltd. and Symbian phones made largely by Nokia Corp. Apple's market share dropped slightly, but the company shipped more iPhones than a year ago.

? Monday: Google says it's cutting about 4,000 jobs at its Motorola Mobility cellphone business and will close or consolidate about one-third of its 90 locations. The reductions represent about 20 percent of Motorola Mobility's 20,000 employees, and 7 percent of Google's overall work force. Two-third of the job cuts will take place outside of the U.S., Google said. The job eliminations come three months after Google bought the once-dominant U.S. cellphone maker for $12.5 billion, chiefly with a view to using its large patent portfolio to bolster its legal defenses.

Coming up:

? Sept. 27: Research In Motion Ltd.

New Lettuce Order Management Platform Is as Beautiful as it Is ...

For entrepreneurs, the Holy Grail of innovation is the opportunity to solve your own needs while also filling a need felt by the broader marketplace. This is exactly the story behind small and medium sized business (SMB) focused SaaS order management platform Lettuce.

Lettuce co-founder Raad Mobrem started a successful dog toy manufacturing and sales business during college and grew it to a scale where order management and data entry were becoming the bane of his existence. ?I hated life,? he says. ?I was spending almost an hour on each order at the end of each day, reentering the same information into multiple disconnected pieces of software.?

Seeing an opportunity to add efficiency to his business, Mobrem and his CTO Frank Jones hacked together a rudimentary version of a platform that could handle mobile point of sales and inventory management while tying into existing contact management (CRM), credit card processing, shipping, accounting, and other widely used software packages.

Not only did the platform reduce the time from order capture to fulfillment by 90 percent, but it also solicited near constant requests for access to the software from customers, vendors, and even competitors whenever they saw it in action. Mobrem and Jones decided to put their pets business on autopilot and focus on turning their nascent software product into a viable business.

The pair have spent the last 18 months rebuilding Lettuce from the ground up to make it beautiful, powerful, and flexible, but most importantly ready for enterprise use. The result launched today and accomplishes each of those things in spades.

Lettuce is both a web-based order management system, Lettuce Hub, and an accompanying a mobile sales app (iPad only), Lettuce Mobile. The company targets targeting manufacturers, wholesalers, and distributors that sell business to businesses.

The platform currently integrates with Quickbooks (accounting); Stripe and Authorize.net (credit card processing); UPS, FedEx, and USPS (shipping); and Salesforce via private beta (CRM); with more integrations in each category coming soon.

With Lettuce, SMBs have no need for paper catalogs, paper order forms, fax machines, or scanners. Rather than waiting until a day?s worth of sales calls are completed to tackle the miserable task of manually entering and submitting multiple orders, sales reps complete orders in seconds on site via the mobile app and corporate fulfillment teams can process all orders instantly including printing shipping labels and packing lists to processing billing. Managers and executives can use the platform to track the status of each sales rep and individual order, as well as view real time sales analytics.

Lettuce is deliberately designed with the simplicity and intuitiveness of a consumer app. Mobrem is adamant that simplicity and power are not mutually exclusive points to Square, Path, and even the Apple.com website as examples of this fact.

While competing solutions exist in this space, they typically target extremely large or micro-businesses, failing to address the needs of SMBs. In the case of large businesses, enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is extremely expensive, overly complicated, and typically operates as a closed system requiring companies to switch from all existing backend solutions. On the other hand, micr-business targeted solutions, such as those provided by SohoOS, do not scale with the needs of growing organizations.

Lettuce is priced as a tiered SaaS solution. While the company lists three different tiers on its website, it is launching today with only one: $59 per month plus $25 for each additional user. This plan gives SMBs access to all features described above except the forthcoming CRM and ecommerce integrations.?These premium features will run $119 per month plus $35 per additional user. A basic version will also be available in the future offering only mobile point of sale and no back end integrations for $29 per month and $15 per additional user.?Compared to existing ERP solutions, which can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars up front and tens of thousands per month, any of the above tiers is eminently affordable.

Lettuce is a graduate of the Winter 2012 class of LA?s Launchpad accelerator and the company has not announced any outside financing to date. The startup?caters specifically to the SMB market and provides an end to end solution that is simple and affordable, yet powerful. For small businesses looking to compete with ?the big boys? the solutions offered by Lettuce are nothing short of a game changer.

Obama, Romney trade attacks on coal, wind power

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (AP) ? President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney sparred over energy policy Tuesday, adding state-specific issues to a contest otherwise focused on the weak economy. Obama mocked Romney's stance on wind power while Romney accused the president of waging a "war on coal."

The emphasis on the economy continued, however. A new Obama television ad and Vice President Joe Biden assailed GOP budget plans to overhaul Medicare, cut trillions of dollars from domestic programs including education and lower taxes on high-income taxpayers. Romney's camp replied with their own TV spot casting Obama as a danger to seniors.

In Iowa, a center of wind energy production in the United States, Obama noted that Romney once dismissed wind power by saying "you can't drive a car with a windmill on it."

"I don't know if he's actually tried that. I know he's had other things on his car," Obama joked, referring to the often-repeated tale of a Romney family road trip with their dog, Seamus, in a carrier strapped to the roof of the car.

"But if he wants to learn something about wind, all he's got to do is pay attention to what you've been doing here in Iowa."

Romney, campaigning in coal-rich eastern Ohio, said Obama was misleading Ohio voters by claiming new jobs in coal producing regions. He also promised to make the U.S. independent from Venezuelan and Middle Eastern oil.

"By the end of my second term, I'll make this commitment: We will have American, we will have North American energy independence," Romney said at a coal mine in Beallsville. "We won't have to buy oil from Venezuela and the Middle East. We're going to be independent."

Standing not far from a bulldozer filled with coal and decorated with a sign that read, "Coal Country Stands With Mitt," Romney accused Obama of lying to voters in this coal-rich region.

"He (Obama) talks about how wonderful it is and how we're adding jobs in the coal industry and adding more coal," Romney said. "I thought, you know, how in the world can you go out there and just tell people things that aren't true. This is a time for truth. If you don't believe in coal, if you don't believe in energy independence, then say it."

The energy fight played amid the different interests of the candidates' respective audiences.

The federal government says between 6,000 and 7,000 jobs in Iowa are related to the wind industry and that the state gets about 20 percent of its electricity from wind.

In a bipartisan vote last week, the Senate's tax-writing committee agreed to renew dozens of tax breaks for businesses like biodiesel and wind energy producers, provisions opposed by many conservatives but that also have won critical support from some Republicans, like Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa.

"Unlike my opponent, I want to stop giving $4 billion in taxpayer subsidies each year to big oil companies that have rarely been more profitable, and keep investing in homegrown energy sources like wind that have never been more promising," Obama told a crowd of about 850 people in Oskaloosa, where stacked hay bales and an old, red pickup truck provided the requisite rural backdrop.

Romney has opposed extending the alternative energy credits, but several Iowa Republicans ? Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad and Grassley among them ? favor the credits. That opposition is giving Obama the chance to create a local wedge issue to appeal to unaligned voters.

Romney spokesman Ryan Williams said the Republican candidate would boost the wind industry by "promoting policies that remove regulatory barriers, support free enterprise and market-based competition, and reward technological innovation." In the coal regions of eastern Ohio, the Obama administration is blamed for pushing ahead with regulations on new power plants that make it harder to build new coal-fired plants that have hurt places like Beallsville.

"To win Ohio, he's got to win eastern Ohio, and he's got to get the votes of people in communities all around us here," Romney said. "And you're not going to let that happen."

The presidential contest moved across five swing states Tuesday, with both campaigns operating on full strength for a second day.

Romney was on his final day of a multistate bus tour, with three stops in Ohio. Running mate Paul Ryan, the Wisconsin congressman, was dispatched to court voters and donors in Colorado and Nevada. For all the advantages of having a running mate to share the workload, the Republicans are working through the challenge of planning double the events, coordinating messaging on the road, handling new security stresses and simply getting to know each other.

Vice President Joe Biden kept up his criticism of the Republican ticket and its support for a House GOP budget plan, telling supporters in rural southern Virginia that Romney and Ryan are "good men" but with "fundamentally flawed judgment."

Biden prompted a Republican backlash when he said the Republican candidates and GOP lawmakers would put them "back in chains" by getting rid of financial industry regulations Obama signed into law.

Said Biden: "Unchain Wall Street. They're going to put y'all back in chains."

Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said Biden's comments are "not acceptable in our political discourse" and a "new low."

An Obama campaign official said it was clear that Biden was talking about the risks of letting Wall Street operate without strong oversight.

Meanwhile, Ryan was to promote Romney's "all-of-the-above" energy approach during his event in Lakewood, Colo., before heading to Las Vegas to highlight Obama's response to the state home foreclosure crisis. The congressman also was expected to attend a private fundraiser with conservative mega-donor Sheldon Adelson.

Also Tuesday, Obama's campaign launched its first television advertisement since Ryan joined the GOP ticket. The ad, which seeks to link Romney to proposed domestic spending cuts in Ryan's austere budget proposal, criticizes Romney for backing plans that would cut college financial aid for nearly 10 million students. That's the same criticism the White House has long leveled against Ryan's budget cuts. Ryan has said Pell grants would still be funded under his budget.

The ad is running in Colorado, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia.

Romney's camp promptly responded with an ad accusing Obama of cutting $700 billion from Medicare to pay for his health care plan. Eager to defend Romney from Obama attacks that Republicans intend to alter Medicare, the ad states: "The Romney-Ryan plan protects Medicare benefits for today's seniors and strengthens the plan for the next generation."

Will Paul Ryan Release His Tax Returns?

As a candidate for Congress, Paul Ryan has released financial disclosure forms for years, but he has never released his tax returns.

We know that Ryan turned over "several years" of tax returns to the Romney campaign during the vice presidential vetting process. We have asked the Romney campaign if any of those returns will be made public. No answer yet.

As a reminder: Dick Cheney released 10 years of returns after he was named George W. Bush's running mate in 2000. Sarah Palin released two years when she added to the John McCain ticket in 2008.

The level of disclosure for the vice presidential candidate is normally set by the presidential candidate. Cheney recently told ABC News that Romney has released enough tax returns. But he also explained why he released a decade of his own as a running mate.

"I did what [Bush] did. In other words, you weren't going to have the presidential candidate do 10 years and the vice-presidential candidate not do that," he said.

An assessment of Ryan's congressional financial disclosures by the Los Angeles Times pegs his wealth at between $2 million and $7.7 million with income from his congressional salary and an inherited trust in the name of his wife.

Democrats have criticized Mitt Romney for not releasing more than one year of tax returns . Romney has also released preliminary returns for 2011. He has promised to release the final return when it is completed.

The Obama campaign and other Democrats have argued that Romney should release more years of his returns, like President Obama did as a candidate. But Romney has said he will not; Democrats, he said, will never be satisfied with how many years he releases and just want to use the information to highlight Romney's wealth.

"If he had two years out, they'd want four," Cheney told me, defending Romney. "If he had four years out, they'd want six. If he had six years out, they'd want 10. He's made his judgment. I'm confident - I have great confidence in what he's put out there. He's been a very successful man. And there's no evidence of any kind that he's done anything improper or inappropriate."

As a vice presidential candidate, then-Sen. Joe Biden released 10 years of tax returns in September 2008 following the Democratic National Convention. He has released his returns every year since.

Candidate Barack Obama released eight years of tax returns before the election: seven years' worth in March 2008, and his '07 return in April 2008. He has released his returns every year since.

Both Obama and Biden have posted their tax returns dating back to 2000 on the campaign's website here .

ABC News' Devin Dwyer contributed to this report.
