In ten days, 15 rock climbers from different corners of the globe will visit Armenia and try to climb the rocks in the country.

On May 21-31, Armenia will hold an international festival on "First Climb" with the purpose of developing rock climbing as a sport in Armenia, promoting tourism and encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

Rock climbing means climbing on the part of a rock where nobody has ever climbed before. In that sense, the rocks of Armenia attract the festival participants with their reliefs, altitude and density.

Utah-based rock-climber Jason Stevens is visiting Armenia for the first time and what attracted him were Armenia's unique, very high precipices.

"Unlike cliffs in the United States, cliffs in Armenia are very low. Rock-climbing is dangerous, but I love it because I love adventures," said Stevens.

Rock climbing is not too developed in Armenia. During the rock climbing festival at the Noravank Gorge, founder of "Up The Rocks" Club Mkhitar Mkhitaryan mentioned that the older generation of Armenians has been involved in rock climbing during the Soviet era, but there were fewer athletes during the years of transition. According to him, the goal of the club is to develop the culture of rock climbing in Armenia, identify the potential of Armenia's nature and present it to the world.

Nairi Abrahamyan, expert on tourism program development of the National Competitiveness Foundation, which is the supporter and sponsor of the festival, says rock climbing may become one of the means for developing tourism in Armenia.

"The only thing left to do is to develop the infrastructures of these beautiful scenes and show the world that Armenia has the potential in this sphere," said Abrahamyan.

The rock climbers were especially attracted by the southern part of Armenia where they mainly train to show their skills. The programs included the basalt columns of Garni and the Arpa gorges.
