As quickly as visitors flocked to the newly unveiled Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial -- which was opened to the public on Aug. 22 in Washington, D.C. -- critics began expressing their outrage over its design. It's too white, and too small, says Blake Gopnik at The Daily Beast. Worse, it fails to capture King's legacy, says Courtland Milloy at The Washington Post. But the King monument is not the first to debut to controversy and public outcry.
