Outgoing Gorillas Live Longer Than Shy Ones
Extroverted gorillas in captivity outlive their shy brethren, a new study of these great apes in North American zoos and sanctuaries finds.
Using methods adapted from studying human personality, keepers, volunteers, researchers and other caretakers gauged 298 individual gorillas' temperaments. These gorillas were followed over 18 years and their life spans recorded. The results revealed the the more sociable, active, playful and curious the gorilla, the longer it was likely to live.
The results are consistent with studies finding that human extroverts outlive introverts, too, study researcher Alex Weiss of the University of Edinburgh said in a statement.
"These findings highlight how understanding the natural history of personality is vital to ensuring the continued health and well-being of humans, gorillas and other great apes," Weiss said.
Studies of centenarians ? people who live to be 100 or more ? have found that positive, outgoing people seem more likely to hit the century mark. A study published in May 2012 surveyed 243 centenarians and found most to be outgoing, optimistic and easygoing. These personality traits may arise from underlying genetics, which also influence health, the researchers told LiveScience when the study came out.
The new gorilla study, published today (Dec. 5) in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, asked humans who knew the gorillas well to rate the animals' dominance, extroversion, neuroticism (a measure of anxiety that has been linked to shorter lives in humans) and agreeableness. They found that only extroversion was linked to life span.
This extroversion-longer life link wasn't affected by the gorilla's gender, age at assessment or how many times the gorilla had been moved from facility to facility.

iOS Game Review: NBA 2K13 - Blogcritics Gaming
Editor's note: This review is focused on the iOS version of the title, not a console edition. The review cannot be extrapolated to a console edition of the game.
As I have said before, putting a game out on iOS (or any handheld OS? like that Android thing I keep hearing about) requires a different approach than doing a console game.? Honestly, I think it's a far more difficult proposition.? You need to have constant saves and allow advancement in little bits and pieces.? Controls are hard to setup ? you want something that really allows the player to do their thing, but space is terribly limited (especially on an iPhone as opposed to an iPad).? And, when there's already a console title available of the same game, making the necessary changes for an iOS version can often leave the iOS version feeling like a dumbed down offering.? I think the effort made with NBA 2K13 for iOS is valiant, but I also think that by all those measures it comes up wanting.?
There is effort here and there is polish, it just isn't in all the right places.?
Maybe part of the problem is how I view my iPhone and how I play games on it.? Games on my iPhone are for the between moments ? I'm at my daughter's school 10 minutes early, I'm sitting in a doctor's waiting room, that kind of thing.? Consequently I need games that can be played for a few minutes here and a few minutes there; they need to be constantly saved, either manually or via autosave.? NBA 2K13 doesn't do that.? If you play a game with four minute quarters, you're playing it straight through, you can't save in the middle.? You can quit if you have to and if you don't do too much with your phone or wait too long before you pick the game back up you may be able to start from where you left off, but the odds of that taking place aren't very good.

October 23rd was mostly the iPad mini's coming out party; an event with one major headliner. But that newborn product didn't enter Apple's ecosystem alone. Amidst the flurry of announcements, there was one other wee hardware relative on hand ready to join in on the launch festivities: a refreshed 2012 Mac mini. Addressing criticisms of last year's model, Apple added Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 ports, upgraded to third-generation Ivy Bridge Core processors to the mix and boosted the standard RAM allotment to 4GB (you can configure it with up to 16 gigs). Perhaps most interestingly, it's now offering a hybrid storage option, the so-called FusionDrive, which combines flash memory with a SATA HDD.
One quirk still remains, though: the product's demographic leanings. Just who is the Mac mini for? Is it the go-anywhere, portable desktop best integrated in yachts, airports, automobiles and living rooms? Or, with a starting price of $599, is it the perfect, low-cost migration assistant (pun intended) for consumers making the switch from a Windows desktop? Court: Alleged torture victims can't sue Rumsfeld
CHICAGO (AP) ? Two American whistleblowers alleging U.S. forces tortured them in Iraq can't sue former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, according to a federal appeals court in Chicago that found those along the military command chain enjoy broad immunity from such torture claims.
Donald Vance and Nathan Ertel filed a lawsuit claiming they were detained in 2006 and tortured after they accused an Iraqi-owned company they worked for of illegally running guns. They argued Rumsfeld personally approved interrogation methods for use by the U.S. military in Iraq, making him responsible for what happened to them during several weeks they were held in military camps.
The 8-3 ruling by the full 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, posted Wednesday afternoon on the court's website, found there's no law granting the men rights to sue Rumsfeld or others in the line of military command. In such a vast bureaucracy, the ruling says, he couldn't be responsible for subordinates who end up crossing legal bounds.
"The secretary of defense has more than a million soldiers under his command," the ruling says. "People able to exert domination over others often abuse that power; it is a part of human nature that is very difficult to control."
The ruling overturns one last year by a three-judge panel of the same court, which gave the lawsuit the green light to go forward.
The decision ultimately conveys near-blanket immunity on all levels of military command up to the defense secretary, plaintiffs' attorney Michael Kanovitz said in a telephone interview Thursday criticizing the finding.
"What comes out is an opinion that's far broader than what was argued before the court," Kanovitz said. "It's a sweeping action."
Kanovitz said he believed the issue was likely at some point to be taken up by the U.S. Supreme Court, but added that his clients hadn't yet decided whether take their case to the next level.
Rumsfeld's attorney, David B. Rivkin, said the decision not only offered protection to Rumsfeld, a member of the President George W. Bush's Cabinet, but to President Barack Obama's and future Cabinets.
"This was not about Rumsfeld at all," Rivkin said. "It was about future decision makers who need to be able to deal with national security issues ... without having to worry they will be sued for decisions they made after they leave office."
The majority opinion, authored by Chief U.S. Circuit Judge Frank Easterbrook, also warns that making Cabinet members financially liable for subordinates could distract them "from management of public affairs" and lead them to worry instead about "the defense of their (personal) bank accounts."
In a strongly worded dissenting opinion, U.S. Circuit Judge David Hamilton notes someone tortured by foreign military forces has clearer legal avenues to sue their alleged torturers in the United States. He said the majority judges were erecting hurdles for U.S. citizens to do the same when tortured by the U.S. military abroad.
"That disparity attributes to our government and to our legal system a degree of hypocrisy that is breathtaking," he wrote.
A judge who voted with the majority but who wrote a separate opinion condemned the interrogation methods used on Vance and Ertel, which allegedly included sleep deprivation, so-called "walling" ? in which they were blindfolded and then walked into walls ? and subjecting them to extreme temperatures, sustained loud music and solitary confinement.
"This shameful fact should not be minimized by using euphemisms such as the term 'harsh interrogation techniques,'" U.S. Circuit Judge Diane Wood wrote. "In my view, (the methods) must be acknowledged for what they are: torture."

FDA reviewing Merck's experimental insomnia drug
WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J. (AP) ? Drugmaker Merck & Co. says the Food and Drug Administration is reviewing its experimental insomnia medication, suvorexant (SOO'vor-eks-ant).
The drug minimizes the morning grogginess common with many sleep aids. It could become a big seller for the Whitehouse Station, N.J., company.
If approved, it would be the first in a new class of medicines for patients with trouble falling or staying asleep. It works by temporarily blocking chemical messengers that keep people awake.
The FDA is doing a standard review, which usually takes 10 months. If approved, suvorexant would be a controlled substance like all hypnotic sleep drugs. They require additional government reviews taking four months or longer.
In studies, suvorexant's most common side effects were tiredness and headache.
Merck also plans to seek approval for suvorexant in other countries.

NowNow Launches Google Voice Search With a Siri-Like Shortcut on Jailbroken iPhones
iOS (jailbroken): Google recently updated its Search app on iOS to include Siri-like voice searches, and if you like Google's offering better (or can't get Siri on your device), free tweak NowNow let you launch Google's voice search with a shortcut?just like Siri.
After installing NowNow (and Google Search, obviously), just head to your Settings app, scroll down to NowNow, and choose which shortcut you'd like to use for Google's voice search (I used a triple-tap on the home button). From then on, invoking that shortcut will bring up Google's search app and go straight to voice search, giving you quicker access than you could get from the home screen. From there you can get directions, look up information, and do anything else with just a few simple words. Check out the video above from AppAdvice to see it in action.

Boduch's Blog: New Computer Users
I can't remember when, or why exactly, I started using a desktop computer. The fact that it was a clunky desktop system running Windows 93 says something all on its own. Clearly, I didn't have any idea how irrelevant that system would become in short order. New computer users don't understand how quickly technology development moves ? if I had known that, I probably wouldn't have bothered. The fact of the matter is that when I first started using a computer, I wasn't a developer, I wasn't using the thing as a tool to do any meaningful work. The real driving force was simple curiosity. That curiosity, I'm sure, was partly driven by the surrounding hype at the time. Computers, and their interconnected fabric were the future. If you didn't understand them and tightly integrate them into every aspect of your daily life, you'd left behind. Back then, I don't think the surrounding hype got the best of me. Hype hasn't slowed down, its simply moved on ? mobile computing for instance. I was too busy doing kid stuff to really appreciate the ramifications, and so I was considered a casual user. Probably like a lot of people around the globe who use computers, but don't depend on them for critical tasks. Then there are other types of users. There are developers, there are non-humans. We can classify users based on why they're currently using a computer, not why they first started.
When I first started using a computer, my perceived notions about the technology were hardware-centric. My interests were based on what I could see ? it's the machine itself that makes things happen. Which makes sense from an educational standpoint. As you're making your way through school, particularly at the younger end, physical objects are the best illustrators of concepts. This is a triangle, the same as the one you're seeing in the book. This is a toy firetruck, the same as the one driving by out on the street. It's much easier to grasp new concepts when they're presented visually, and in my case, the computer itself was responsible for ? whatever it was I thought computers did. From there, you start interacting with objects. It's one thing to see an object in the real world and draw an analogy to a concept formed in your mind. It's a more powerful thing to take a toy broom and start using it the same way the teacher does. The user interface on any computer system is the first thing any new computer user will manipulate if given the chance. This first interaction could make or break that person's lifelong relationship with computer technology. If you have a bad experience, like the first time you play a sport and end up injuring yourself ? you're impression of that experience taints any future variations of it. And so an interface that allows the user to perform actions on it is better than one with limited capabilities. But it goes further than that to include instruction. Whether the interface the first time user is being presented with has many actions, or is restrictive, they need to be discoverable. They need to lead to more inquiries from the user. Well, I can do that, can I do this? That doesn't work, did I do it wrong? Encouragement of deep probing can really suck people in. But not everyone.
If it were true that all was needed to create a successful user interface were instructional simplicity, there wouldn't be nearly as much software in existence as there is today. If you think about it, software, ultimately, is designed for some actor to solve a particular problem they're having. But, if first time users could all pick up how to perform queries, how to issue commands, and how to extend and improve the system at first glance, we wouldn't need all this specialized software that strives to make things easier for a particular class of user. From another point of view, new computer users are embryonic, and once they're exposed to their new computer environment, they develop new skills, attitudes, and ideas that fall outside the realm of computing. Computer use has a cumulative effect over time, and over this time, the knowledge you're building up helps determine your user class. After first starting with a computer, it doesn't take long to figure out that it was a loathsome experience or that it was an important tool and you cannot figure out how you lived without it. But form this point onward, you're no longer a new computer user, you're a software user.
Once you find yourself fitting into a general class of software user, you tend to evolve in a certain direction. Over time, you develop a personal taste for what makes a good application. The use cases you're playing into also determines the trajectory of your software choices. You make some bad calls, your direction changes slightly, toward a different set of software that does mostly the same thing, but maybe it does once small aspect of it better. Or maybe you've found some application that works exactly how you see fit. Maybe this confirms some doubts you've had as a user in your chosen problem domain and you've now further solidified the path you're on. What's interesting is how all this happens. There is such a diverse set of usage patterns out in the software ecosystem that it's very difficult to measure patterns. I'm not talking about the hoards of Mac and Windows users ? I'm talking about the complex configurations that seem to emerge from a new user of the software. Chances are, there is a nearly identical user, one how follows the same daily routine and who is trying to solve the exact same problems. But they accomplish their goals using an entirely different suite of software than someone who has set out to do the same thing. How can there possibly be so many ways to solve the same problem? Or perhaps its not as much about the finish line as it is about taste. If you think about using computers for entertainment value ? movies, games, and so on ? there is a completely different set of rationales. Here, as users, we're not thinking about how to stream content so that it has a minimal impact on others streaming the same content. That's a development perspective of someone working at the media company delivering the content. The user looking for entertainment value is looking at the content. But also the controls that allow them to manipulate the content ? changing the channel, setting preferences and bookmarks.
If I were to sit down with one of my friends and compare preferences for media on our computers, there are bound to be some similarities, but also some important contrasts. The funny thing is, I could probably track backward through time and see how our preferences diverged. It once again comes down to user class. Or in this case, each of our multiple user classes. I don't think each user around the globe can safely fit in one class of user anymore. I think most of us are wearing multiple hats. Especially if you're making a living working with computers professionally. Here, you're likely to have multiple classes applied to your user profile due to your separation of business life and personal entertainment. And, depending on what you do professionally, your profile may require more classes still to fully capture the complexity of your experience. All this leads me to believe that there is a feedback mechanism in play here. Developing a class definition for a user and applying it to someone isn't as clear cut as saying that they've used this particular type of software for so long and therefore fall under this tree. I think it's a combination of choices they've made early on as a user, what led them to make those choices, and once they've established themselves with a base user class, the process repeats itself. Only as life with computers goes one, the less significant your decisions become. At this point, the choices the user makes are an exercise in fine-tuning.
Early in a person's life with computers, they're exposed to the notion of free software, or, open source software. It isn't likely that they'll make the distinction between free and open source just yet, but that's not important. What matters is that fact that some users make the mental leap to understand that there is software available for use, free of charge, that can likely solve any of your problems. Of course, every individual use case is unique and it isn't fair to say that paying for software is never the better option ? because a lot of the time it is. What is essential, is that users understand the distinction early on in life. It's important to understand where open source is the better choice and how to go about using it. It'll set the cost expectations not only for yourself, but for newer generations that you help along the way. Given that many open source projects are fairly mainstream ? you can use Linux for 100% entertainment value ? it's more accessible these days. And if it's more accessible, the more likely users of open source technology are likely to understand the motivations of the developers that created it. And that's a valuable lesson to someone new with software.
So if understanding the full spectrum of software ? both paid proprietary and free open source ? is there a bad thing that we should avoid in early computer usage? The only thing I can think of is never take anything as a given. Especially if you're teaching kids to use computers. I think once you've established a trustful attitude toward software you've never used before, you set the bar low in terms of what you can get out of the software. Learn how to poke holes in the walls and see if the code starts pouring out. I think having this ability will help you detach software quality from branding and ultimately lead more informed life with computers.

Chicago's Cook County drops bullet tax, but keeps gun levy
CHICAGO (Reuters) - The top executive of the county that includes Chicago on Wednesday dropped a proposed tax on bullets but kept a plan to tax firearms to help defray healthcare expenses associated with the high rate of gun violence.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle dropped a proposed tax of 5 cents a bullet because the tax in some cases would have been more than the ammunition price itself.
If approved by the board, the nation's third most populous county could be the first major U.S. metropolitan area to impose a tax as a form of gun control, according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.
"It is very important to us to tax guns because we know that guns are the sources of the incredible violence we have in our neighborhoods," said Preckwinkle at a news conference on Wednesday. She said 29 percent of the guns used in crimes in Chicago were purchased legally in suburban Cook County.
There have been 440 murders in Chicago so far this year, surpassing the total in all of last year - 435 - and 22.2 percent more than the same period a year ago, according to Chicago Police.
Under the plan, the County would impose a $25 tax on the purchase of firearms. The tax is expected to raise $600,000 in revenue in 2013.
Preckwinkle also proposed dedicating $2 million toward a violence prevention program, which would primarily provide grants to non-profit organizations with proven experience in violence prevention or community outreach.
She noted that 670 victims of gun violence were treated by the county's health system last year, at the average cost of $52,000 per patient.
The Cook County Board of Commissioners will vote on the firearm tax proposal on Friday. Commissioner Jesus Garcia, who supports the revised plan, said he thinks it will be approved.
Taxes on buyers or sellers of guns and/or ammunition have been proposed but failed in six states, including California, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania, according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.
Tennessee has a hunting-related, 10-cents tax on shotgun shells and cartridges which applies to sellers. The money is used to support wildlife resources.
Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, was not immediately available for comment on the revised proposal. He had called the original proposal one of a string of "schemes" to punish law-abiding firearm owners and dealers.
Father Michael Pfleger, pastor of Chicago's St. Sabina Church, says the tax will make a difference, just as cigarette taxes affected cigarette consumption. He called gun violence "the undeclared disaster," and noted that in his crime-troubled South Side neighborhood a gun can be bought for as little as $20.
"We are a city with more guns than computers in many neighborhoods and that's unacceptable," Pfleger said.

The Enzo Ferrari Story
It's mid winter, northern Italy, February 1898, and it is snowing heavily. Heavily enough, in fact, to prevent one young couple in the area from officially recording the birth of their son until two days after the event, on 20 February after his actual birth on the 18th - so forever after, 20 February 1898 would always be quoted as his birth date. And as it would turn out, that would become typical of the new arrival's relationship with authority and convention almost throughout his life, when he never seemed to have much time for doing things the 'ordinary' way. Because Enzo Anselmo Ferrari, as the boy was officially registered at two days old, would achieve great things, but rarely by working to the book.
The family lived on the outskirts of Modena, where Enzo's father, Alfredo, ran a small but busy metalworking business that, for most of the time, gave the family a fairly comfortable lifestyle. Enzo had an older brother, also called Alfredo, who was two years his senior. They shared many things, including a bedroom when they were young, and a love of homing pigeons, but in one respect they were quite different, and with a surprising twist. Alfredo senior would have liked both boys to follow in his footsteps and become engineers, but while young Alfredo accepted the idea and studied diligently, Enzo (who would become synonymous with some of the most exotic automobile engineering in the world) never showed the remotest interest in formal engineering training, or to be honest in a formal education at all.
At school he was far more interested in sports than in academic subjects, and he fulfilled one of his childhood career ambitions by briefly writing local football match reports for the prestigious newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. But he grew out of an even bigger ambition, to become an opera singer, and in September 1908, he switched ideas again, after his father had taken him to nearby Bologna where he saw Felice Nazzaro's FIAT winning the Coppa Florio road race. Now, the ten-year-old Enzo Ferrari wanted to be a racing driver.
He had already had contact with cars, at a time when they were still rare in rural Italy where the family lived. His father owned one, and had started to service and repair cars for other owners in his workshops. And in his early teens, Enzo himself began to learn how to drive. How little did he know then that there was going to be such a famous marque of sportscars known as Ferrari, and would go on to world recognition on the road and on the racetrack.
At the same time, Enzo Ferrari was being forced to grow up very quickly. In 1914, World War I broke out; and in 1916, within months of each other, Enzo's father and brother both died - his father from pneumonia, his brother from an illness contracted during military service. In 1917, Enzo followed him into the army, and was assigned to be a blacksmith, shoeing horses. Like father and older brother, though, he suffered illnesses, and after a round of operations and hospital stays he was discharged in 1918, with what looked like poor prospects for the immediate future.
The family business had died with his father and brother, he had no real qualifications, and there were very few jobs on offer. He found one, though, and with a motoring connection - driving refurbished ex-military light vehicle chassis between Turin and Milan, for a Bolognese engineer who had started a business rebodying them for the civilian market. And it was through this apparently mundane driving job that Enzo Ferrari moved a step closer to that still burning motor sporting ambition. History would show how he fulfilled his dreams with the number of Ferrari sales that have been acheived since that time. The world just wouldn't be the same without the prancing horse.

New way to prevent recurrent ear infections?
ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Eliminating bacteria's DNA and boosting antimicrobial proteins that already exist may help prevent middle ear infections from reoccurring. These are the findings from a Nationwide Children's Hospital study that examined how an immune defense protein common in the middle ear interacts with a structure meant to protect a colony of bacteria.
The bacterium nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHI) causes a wide range of diseases of both the lower and upper airways, including middle ear infection. NTHI, like most other bacteria, can form a biofilm, a robust community of bacteria that allows the bacteria to evade the host's immune system and protects the bacteria from antibiotics and other therapies designed to kill them.
Human beta-defensin-3 is an antimicrobial defense protein expressed in the middle ear of humans and other mammals that kills both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Previous research has shown that if expression of beta-defensin is disrupted, the host's ability to control the bacteria in the upper airway is altered and infection worsens.
Investigators in The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital hypothesized that human beta-defensin-3 might lose its power to kill NTHI if it got caught up within the extracellular DNA that makes up a biofilm's outer layer, thus preventing its contact with bacteria within the biofilm.
"Antimicrobial host defense proteins, like human beta-defensin-3, have been shown to bind to non-host DNA," says Lauren O. Bakaletz, PhD director of the Center for Microbial Pathogenesis "This interaction has an impact on the defense protein's ability to function."
Upon examining their animal model of middle ear infection, Dr. Bakaletz' team found that bacterial DNA and the animal's defense peptides were detected together in biofilms that developed during infection. Also, the defense peptide was predominantly co-localized with the biofilm's extracellular DNA.
When the team exposed the bacteria that cause ear infections to a concentration of human-beta defensin-3 that is typically detected in the a middle ear of a child with active infection, the peptide was able to kill 100 percent of the NTHI, but the killing stopped when extracellular DNA was introduced to the reaction.
"These data support the conclusion that the killing activity of the antimicrobial defense protein was decreased in an NTHI-induced biofilm due to its interaction with eDNA," says Dr. Bakaletz, who is the lead study author and professor of Pediatrics and Otolaryngology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.
When they removed extracellular DNA from the biofilm, the killing activity of the defense peptide was rescued.
"The ability to restore antimicrobial defense protein activity is encouraging, since biofilms are resistant to most treatments, including traditional antibiotics," says Dr. Bakaletz.
Dr. Bakaletz says this study provides evidence for a new treatment regimen to target biofilms formed by NTHI during middle ear infection. One approach would be to deliver a therapeutic agent that can disrupt bacterial DNA, in conjunction with human beta-defensin-3 to the middle ear of a child with chronic, recurrent infection. Physicians could follow the same pathway used to target the middle ear during ear tube surgery, a common treatment for chronic ear infections.
"This approach would likely bolster the ability of the innate immune system to manage NTHI-induced biofilms, avoiding the need for antibiotics or empowering the use of antibiotics we already have in our arsenal," says Dr. Bakaletz. "Doing so could help diminish the recurrent nature of middle ear infection."

The final installment of this 4-part series on believable romantic relationships: does the audience care if they get together in the end?
In the first three parts, I discussed the importance of the relationship being between two characters with compatible characteristics.? They must have mutually attractive traits that make the audience believe they are a perfect match.? Secondly, the obstacles they face must be realistic according to the rules of the world in which they live.? The crazier the world, the crazier the obstacle.? Thirdly, this obstacle must be one which can be overcome without a doubt that it will ever resurface in the future.
You could write a love story that has all these elements and still the audience may not care if they get together in the end.? So what makes us care?
?
Likability
It?s one thing for the characters to like one another, but it?s also just as important that the audience likes them too.? Blake Snyder?s book Save the Cat is so titled because he believes that your protagonist must do something kind early on to make him immediately likable to the audience.? Once you establish your characters? good side, they can go on to do all sorts of horrible things and we?ll forgive them and still root for them because we know they?re not all bad.
Likability is two-fold:
- Character likability ? does the audience find each character likable
- Relationship likability ? does the audience like how these two are together as a couple
Lose A Guy.? In the opening scene, Andie rushes off to save her friend Michelle when she doesn?t come into work after another bad breakup.? Andie says a lot of wonderful things about Michelle and even protects her from having her personal life exposed by offering to do the article on How to Lose A Guy.? Ben is pretty unsympathetic in his first few scenes, but we see women find him sexy and his coworkers like him so there must be something nice about him.? He doesn?t seem like a total jerk, but he seems cocky and manipulative.? He swoops in on a business meeting to steal the Lauer Diamond account, yet once he states his case, you kind of like him for his confidence but you also kind of hate him because he doesn?t pause to consider the consequences of manipulating a woman to fall in love with him.? Then as he charms Andie, you really like him, but more importantly, you like the two of them together.? As the film progresses, there are several scenes showing how great these two are together and when you see Andie truly fall in love with Ben at his parents? house, you can?t help but fall in love with them too.
Harry & Sally.? In the opening scene, Harry?s making out with his girlfriend.? He seems kind and genuine because he tells her he loves her and he?ll call her soon and that he already misses her.? Sally honks the horn to interrupt them kissing, which is rude, but funny and then smiles and apologizes, which makes her likeable.? But then we see his crassness and so-called dark side, which is really just pessimism.? And Sally comes off as uptight and pragmatic.? Their flaws are funny and realistic, which makes them likable especially when they spar with one another because of them.? Over the span of the next several years, these two grow into more mature adults and their neuroses are not as prominent, but also because Harry and Sally come to appreciate them, the audience does too.
Friends with Benefits.? Both characters are immediately likable as they?re smart, funny and vulnerable.? It makes sense these two would stay away from each other to avoid heartbreak after getting dumped and audiences can relate to that.?? These two are great together because they?re fun, witty, playful and don?t take their relationship too seriously.? They challenge one another and they?re best friends.? By the time Dylan does the douchebag thing and uses Jamie?s weakness as a reason not to be with her, we hate him for it but understand why he said it: he loves her, but is too afraid to admit it.? So we forgive him right away and it makes us really want him to go after her and apologize.
Legally Blonde.? In the beginning, it?s a little hard to like Elle because she?s so superficial so we can see why Warner dumped her.? Yet it?s because he dumps her when she?s expecting a proposal that we feel sorry for her and resent Warner for hurting her especially in such a shallow way.? Once Elle decides to win him back by going to law school at of all places, Harvard, you can?t help but admire her gumption.? You want Elle to get her way, but you kind of don?t want Warner to win.? Because everyone else is horrible to her especially Warner?s new fiancee, Warner doesn?t seem so awful and Elle?s sweetness shines through.? As Elle matures and realizes her worth, we want Elle to see she?s better than Warner and to end up with someone who appreciates her for who she is, like Emmett.

Unlikability
What happens when two characters and their relationship is unlikable?? Sometimes films rely so heavily on the charm and appeal of the actors playing the parts that they forget to make them likable.? When characters are too horrible for too long and horrible to one another, there?s nothing to root for even when they do ultimately become better people and fall in love.? This isn?t to say you can?t have a love story between two unlikable characters and make it work.? Characters can be largely unlikable, but not so horrible that there?s no humanity or vulnerability in them.
The Proposal.? When we first meet Andrew we like him simply because he cares if he?s late for work and profusely thanks the Starbucks girl by name when she has his coffees ready.? Yet once he?s in the office, he?s not so nice: he calls the receptionist ?Captain Obvious? for telling him he?s late then yells at the mail guy for bumping into him causing him to spill his coffees.? Margaret, however, is immediately unlikable.? As she enters the office, everyone avoids her.? She?s a bitch, she talks about people as if they?re wasting her time and can?t accept a compliment, then fires someone, and threatens her assistant into marrying her, not caring how it affects his life.? It?s not until about an hour into the film that you see her softer side and actually start to like her, but it might come a bit too late.? Andrew begins to see why she is such a heartless bitch and develops a soft spot for her, so we do too.? He also pushes her around for a change, which she needs and deserves, but it doesn?t necessarily make us like them together as a couple.? They?re supposedly good together because he?s the only one who can stand up to her and the only one she opened up to, but it doesn?t quite work.
If we had a glimpse into Margaret?s vulnerable side before she ?proposes? to Andrew, we?d understand why she was such a cold-hearted bitch and it would have made us want her to break down her defenses to find love.? Margaret didn?t have any friends or family so she did everything herself and has become very successful, but we didn?t see how she felt about it.? If she felt lonely or longed for a relationship or had at least one friend, it would have made her more human.? I guess the idea was that she didn?t think about it, which was why she was able to ?propose? without considering the consequences.? But because we later see she does have a heart and is capable of letting it show, she must have the capacity to think about other people.? She?s human so she must think about relationships, must be attracted to men even if it?s just for sex, but we have no idea how she feels about any of this.? If she closed herself off to love for a reason, it would have helped to know this up front.
It would have helped too to know something about Andrew?s romantic life before the ?proposal?.? He?s too busy to have a girlfriend or even show interest in dating, which is obvious when he doesn?t flirt with the cute girl at Starbucks, but we should at least know how he feels about marriage or that he left someone behind in Alaska to pursue his dream.? Then we?d know what a great sacrifice it was for him to marry someone he didn?t love at the moment she ?proposes?.
