Texas' Gilbert gets another chance to start at QB
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Garrett Gilbert has earned a second chance to be the starting quarterback at Texas.
The junior who threw 17 interceptions as Texas went 5-7 last season was announced Monday as the starter for the Longhorns' season opener Saturday night at home against Rice.
Gilbert won a four-way battle for the job in new coordinator Bryan Harsin's offense. The Longhorns threw the position open after Texas had one of its worst offensive seasons in 20 years in 2010 and Gilbert wound up throwing for just 10 touchdowns.
The question now is just how strong of a hold does he have on the job and how quickly would Texas go to No. 2 Case McCoy if Gilbert struggles?
"He's the starting quarterback at Texas. If he moves the ball and scores, he'll keep it," coach Make Brown said. "He wouldn't be our starting quarterback if we didn't have faith in Garrett."
Texas' depth chart had been kept secret through training camp, but Gilbert said he was told a week ago he had moved to No. 1 after the team's second scrimmage.
Harsin tried to make the competition as intense as possible between Gilbert, McCoy, and freshmen David Ash and Connor Wood. The Longhorns charted every pass of every drill, third down conversion and touchdown drive during camp, and Harsin said Gilbert had the best understanding of the plays, defensive reads and audibles.
After Gilbert struggled in the first scrimmage, he was busted out of the top spot and told to work his way back up as the others were given snaps with the first team, Harsin said.
"He competed," Harsin said. "He built himself back into the position he is now".
Gilbert called the competition fun and said the four quarterbacks have a good relationship.
"All summer, during spring, I was just worried about trying to improve ... The quarterback controversy or whatever, I knew that would settle itself," he said. "I'm not concerned about making mistakes. I'm just concerned about playing football, even if that means handing the ball off every play."
Gilbert's teammates said they have watched him grow into a better leader.
"He has that spark in his eye and wants to do great," guard David Snow said. "He's improved dramatically."
Whether Gilbert proves to be a rah-rah leader or quiet one is immaterial, Harsin said.
"Alpha male or not, ultimately what the 10 other guys care about is 'Are you going to get me in the end zone?'" Harsin said.
The choice of Gilbert as starter is likely to be met with some derision from Texas fans, who watched the Longhorns lose five of seven home games last season and heaped much of their criticism on the former high school All-American from nearby Lake Travis.
Gilbert often looked frustrated and unable to take control of an offense that sputtered badly, particularly in home losses to Iowa State and UCLA, and a road defeat at Kansas State when Gilbert threw five interceptions.
Gilbert said he can't worry about what fans think of him. He said he held his head high in the offseason and didn't shy away from the public. He also said he didn't hear any criticism.
"I guess I don't have a noticeable face," joked Gilbert, who at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, stands out in most crowds. "I was able to stay fairly incognito."
Gilbert, who stays in touch with former Longhorns star quarterback Colt McCoy (Case's older brother), said the best advice he's received was not to dwell on the past and concentrate on the competition. McCoy had to beat out Jevan Snead to win the starting role in 2006 and finished his career with 45 victories, an NCAA record for starting quarterbacks.
"It's not something you can worry about anymore," Gilbert said. "As far as the quarterback job was concerned, it was all about me."

Last throes of Libya war focus on Sirte (Reuters)
TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Libyan rebel forces were converging on Muammar Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte on Monday, hoping to deliver the coup de grace of their revolution but uncertain if the fallen strongman was holed up there.
The fugitive Gaddafi's whereabouts were still not known and it was possible he was still in hiding in Tripoli after it fell to rebel forces and his 42-year-old reign collapsed.
NATO war planes struck at Sirte, on the Mediterranean coast, for a third day on Sunday, a spokesman for the multi-national alliance said in Brussels.
"We're paying close attention to what's happening in Sirte because we know that there are remnants of the regime that are there," the spokesman said.
On the ground, rebel forces also closed in and said they would seize Sirte by force if negotiations for its surrender failed.
Gaddafi was born near Sirte, 450 km (300 miles) east of Tripoli, in 1942 and after he seized power in 1969 he built it up from a sleepy fishing village into an important city and power center of 100,000 people.
He still retains support and sympathy there, so whether or not he has chosen to retreat to the city to make a last stand, its capture will still be strategically and symbolically important to the rebels as they consolidate their victory.
One rebel commander said his forces were within 100 km of Sirte from the east and others were advancing from the west.
On the coastal highway east of Tripoli, tank transporters were carrying Soviet-designed T-55 tanks in the direction of Sirte. Rebels said the tanks were seized from an abandoned military base in Zlitan.
SKIRMISHES
Jamal Tunally, a rebel military commander in Misrata, told Reuters: "The front line is 30 km from Sirte. We think the Sirte situation will be resolved peacefully, God willing."
"Now we just need to find Gaddafi. I think he is still hiding underneath Bab al-Aziziyah like a rat," he said, referring to Gaddafi's Tripoli compound that rebels overran on Tuesday.
From the east, rebel fighters pushed 7 km past the village of Bin Jawad and secured the Nawfaliyah junction, a rebel spokesman said.
"We're going slowly," spokesman Mohammad Zawawi told Reuters. "We want to give more time for negotiations, to give a chance for those people trying to persuade the people inside Sirte to surrender and open their city."
Mindful of preserving their image to the world and stung by accounts that captured Gaddafi loyalists have been found dead with their hands tied behind their backs, the rebel leaders sent a text message urging followers not to abuse prisoners.
"Remember when you arrest any follower of Gaddafi, that he is like you, that he has dignity like you, that his dignity is your own dignity, and that it is enough humiliation for him that he is already a prisoner," it said.
Many corpses have been found, some of slain Gaddafi soldiers, others the victims of killings in cold blood.
Rebel military spokesman Colonel Ahmed Bani said there was concern for the fate of 40,000 prisoners who he said had been detained by Gaddafi's forces and who were still unaccounted for. It was possible some were being held in underground bunkers in Tripoli that rebels had been unable to locate.
Sarah Leah Whitson, of Human Rights Watch, said: "The evidence we have been able to gather so far strongly suggests that Gaddafi government forces went on a spate of arbitrary killing as Tripoli was falling."
The rebel leadership sought to establish control in the capital after days of confusion and sporadic skirmishing with the remnants of Gaddafi's forces.
The stench of rotting bodies and burning garbage still hung over the city and food, water and other supplies were running short, indications that despite the euphoria of victory, plenty of challenges lay ahead.
PIPELINE
Gaddafi, 69, is on the run and the fear among his foes is that he intends to lead an insurgency against them.
The National Transitional Council, recognized by dozens of states as Libya's legitimate government, rejected any idea of talks with him, saying he was a criminal who must be brought to justice.
"We did not negotiate when we were weak, and we won't negotiate now that we have liberated all of Libya," NTC information minister Mahmoud Shammam told a news conference.
The Associated Press quoted Gaddafi's spokesman, Moussa Ibrahim, as saying Gaddafi was still in Libya and wanted to discuss forming a transitional government with the NTC.
NTC officials say Gaddafi, his son Saif al-Islam and his spy chief should be tried in Libya, although they are wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.
The NTC and its Western backers are acutely aware of the need to prevent Libya collapsing into the kind of chaos that plagued Iraq for years after the U.S.-led invasion of 2003.
The de facto government, whose leaders plan to move to Tripoli from Benghazi this week, is trying to impose security, restore basic services and revive the energy-based economy.
Officials said a gas export pipeline to Europe had been repaired and Libya's biggest refinery had survived the war intact.
In the west, Tunisian authorities reopened the main border crossing into Libya, restoring a supply route for Tripoli, after Gaddafi forces were driven out on Friday.
That should help relieve a looming humanitarian crisis in the city, where food, drinking water and medicines are scarce.
Trucks loaded with food and other goods were already moving across the Ras Jdir crossing toward Tripoli, about two hours' drive away.
The NTC issued messages urging electricity workers to get back to work and efforts to pay the salaries of public sector workers were under way.
Tripoli residents queued for bread or scoured grocery shops for food. Many took a stoical view of their plight.
"This is a tax we pay for our freedom," said Sanusi Idhan, a layer waiting to buy food.

Inside Redstate's 'Junior High' Scandal (The Atlantic Wire)
Today, the prominent conservative blog Redstate is in a mess of right-wing drama following a Politico scoop that Redstate managing editor Erick Erickson was pressured by his bosses to pull support for a Republican candidate in a key Virginia Senate race. The race involves GOP frontrunner and former Virginia Senator George Allen and the former head of the Virginia Tea Party Patriots, Jamie Radtke, who are both vying for the GOP's nomination. The pressure on Erickson to back away from his previous support for the Tea Party candidate was evident in one of Erickson's emails, obtained by Politico:
Erick Erickson, said he shifted his stance in a key Senate race because the company that publishes his RedState.com is ?socially connected? to former Virginia Sen. George Allen.Erickson told Allen?s challenger, Jamie Radtke, that he had to moderate his support for her because ?my bosses are huge Allen friends,? according to an email he sent earlier this month, which her campaign manager forwarded to POLITICO.
The conservative media powerhouse Eagle Publishing, which owns the venerable conservative journal Human Events and the prolific Regnery Publishing, has published RedState since 2007. Eagle Publishing President Jeffrey Carneal contributed $1,000 to Allen's last Senate campaign.
Today, the Politico scoop sent Erickson (who's also a CNN analyst) scrambling to assert his editorial independence. He first admitted that his bosses at Eagle Publishing did attempt to influence him on his previous endorsement of Radtke in a blog post:
My bosses at Eagle Publishing do in fact have a relationship with George Allen, and a very good one, and asked me ? after I endorsed her ? to please go slow for once instead of shooting first and asking questions later...To be clear: my bosses were not telling me to stay out, but telling me to wait a while. Perhaps Cuccinelli would get in. Perhaps someone else would get in. Perhaps Radtke would implode.
However, Erickson insists he didn't soften his support for Radtke because of his bosses. He says he simply soured on the candidate herself.
The Radtke campaign clearly was not getting traction and they and their proxies began incessantly harassing me to write about her campaign and do what I did for Marco Rubio and Mike Lee.I didn?t want to be the bad guy or burn a bridge needlessly, so instead of saying I wouldn?t because the campaign sucked and was going nowhere or that I would wait and keep being pestered with ?now will you do it?, I told them I could not. It seemed at the time to be the easiest way out.
I was certainly wrong.
Is Erickson telling the truth about how he soured on Radtke? It's impossible to say. But the story raises all sorts of questions about the intersection of partisan punditry and electioneering, and sheds light on how influential the conservative blog is in its kingmaker status. Interestingly, the story doesn't end there.

Erickson, quite reasonably feeling burned by whoever passed along his private e-mail to Politico, writes an additional post this afternoon blaming right-wing blogger Dan Riehl. In a strange rationale for the e-mail leak, Erickson says Riehl tried to blackmail him after a Redstate blogger criticized fellow right-wing blogger Michele Malkin for her opposition to Texas Governor Rick Perry's position on HPV vaccines. Erickson claims that Riehl promised to "burn Erick's integrity to the ground" if Redstate didn't retract the post attacking Malkin. Erickson says he refused. "I certainly wasn?t going to apologize for something... let alone be more or less blackmailed into an editorial position." But when he tried to stop Riehl from exacting his revenge, he failed:
I emailed some mutual friends to see if they could calm Dan down. Dan took that as me trying to have him fired, which was definitely not the case. Next thing I know, friends of mine are getting text messages and phone calls that various conservative radio show hosts, etc. are going to come after me.I?m guessing Dan latched on my emailing our mutual friends, convinced himself I wanted to get him fired instead of just calmed down, and decided to go all junior high cat fight on RedState and me...
I can now confirm Dan Riehl is the original source to the Politico regarding the Radtke story.
We asked Politico's Ben Smith if Riehl had been his original source and, predictably, he declined to comment. Riehl also declined to say if he provided Smith with any information saying "this isnt my fight and im just watching. I have nothing to say about anything one way or another." Still, it's clear Erickson is somewhat furious with Riehl. The signoff on his latest post accuses the blogger of acting like "junior high school girls":
Well played, Dan. Well played. The Radtke campaign owes you big time. Sometimes the collective forces of the internet act like junior high school girls.For his part, Riehl wasn't quite ready to throw a punch back. "I don't follow RedState or watch CNN," he tells The Atlantic Wire. Looks like things in the righty blogosphere are getting personal!

German Left Party flounders amid financial crisis (AP)
BERLIN ? These should be promising times for Germany's Left Party: a stubborn financial crisis, an unpopular center-right government, and upcoming regional elections in two longtime strongholds.
Instead, an effusive birthday message to Cuba's Fidel Castro and some members' defense of the Berlin Wall have drawn unflattering attention this week to a party that can't quite escape its ex-communist roots.
It has struggled with weak leadership and discord recently as other opposition parties benefit from government discomfort over the eurozone debt crisis, nuclear energy and more. Once-frequent talk of it joining a future German government has ebbed away.
"The situation in our country, the social situation in Europe, is such that we should be clearly ahead in polls ? but we're not," conceded the Left's parliamentary group leader Gregor Gysi.
With demands centering on reversing welfare-state cuts and also including strict opposition to German military involvement in Afghanistan, the Left Party prides itself on standing apart from more established parties.
Still, in elections next month, the party looks likely to be voted out as junior governing partner in Berlin ? one of two regions it helps run. Its chances in another eastern state, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, are uncertain.
It flopped badly in two regional votes in western Germany in March ? in which its center-left rivals, the Social Democrats and Greens, triumphed.
Nationally the Left Party has slipped to 8 percent support, down from 12 percent in 2009's election.
Not the best time for the Cuban Embassy to publish a message from co-leaders Gesine Loetzsch and Klaus Ernst congratulating "dear Comrade Fidel Castro" on turning 85.
"You can look back full of pride over a life full of battles and successful work at the head of the Cuban revolution," the letter said, praising his "political far-sightedness" but making no mention of human-rights issues.
The letter, which surfaced last weekend, was sent Aug. 13 ? the 50th anniversary of East Germany's building of the Berlin Wall. At a regional convention that day, a few delegates refused to stand for a minute of silence to people killed at the communist country's fortified border.
The hard-left Junge Welt daily, in which the party has advertised, marked the anniversary with a front-page headline saying "Thank you" for the wall's construction ? prompting many members to protest.
That all fed long-standing doubts about how far the Left Party has put behind it the communist past ? although its leaders now indicate they regret the style of the Castro letter, which it emerged was composed by party workers and automatically signed in the leaders' names.
Greens leader Claudia Roth called the Left Party "a retro party that hasn't come to terms with the real challenge of a lively democracy."
That underlined sinking chances of it entering national government, something Oskar Niedermayer, a political science professor at Berlin's Free University, said is now "extremely unlikely."
These days, "when it makes it into the media, it's because of internal squabbles or dubious remarks about the past with which western German voters, above all, of course have gigantic problems," Niedermayer said.
The Left Party was born in 2005, when the ex-communist Party of Democratic Socialism ? which had made no inroads outside former East Germany ? joined forces with western leftists angered by a welfare-state reform drive.
Ex-communist Gysi and Oskar Lafontaine, a charismatic ex-Social Democrat, led the Left Party into parliament that year, then into a string of regional legislatures across Germany.
That fed speculation that the center-left might be unable to regain power without its support.
But Lafontaine stepped down last year due to illness, and the party has struggled under less charismatic successors Loetzsch and Ernst ? an east-west duo that reflects the party's still-fragmented nature.
Loetzsch has drawn criticism for penning an article on "the ways to communism," while Ernst made few friends by saying he enjoys driving a Porsche.
Gysi said the party has made great progress in overcoming the communist past.
But he conceded that "we have been too preoccupied with ourselves in recent months ? that's never good."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? After months of unrelieved gloom and discord, Congress and President Barack Obama are starting to make a dent in the federal budget deficit. It's projected to shrink slightly to $1.28 trillion this year, and bigger savings from this month's debt ceiling deal are forecast over the next decade.
No one's celebrating. There will be plenty of red ink for years to come.
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projected Wednesday that annual budget deficits will be reduced by a total of $3.3 trillion over the next decade, largely because of the deficit reduction package passed by Congress earlier this month. The office also forecast persistently high unemployment, a troubling political prospect for President Barack Obama in the crucial months of his campaign to win a second term.
Even with the anticipated big savings, annual budget deficits are expected to total nearly $3.5 trillion over the next decade ? and much more if Bush-era tax cuts scheduled to expire at the end of next year are extended. In all, nearly $8.5 trillion would be added to the national debt over the next 10 years if the tax cuts and certain spending programs are kept in place, the budget office report said.
The national debt now stands at more than $14.6 trillion.
The numbers help illustrate the urgency facing a new joint committee in Congress that is charged with finding $1.2 trillion to $1.5 trillion in budget savings over the next decade. Some lawmakers are calling for an even bigger package, a tall order given the bitter debate that produced this month's debt deal.
"CBO's report is yet more evidence that Congress faces a twin challenge of a sluggish near-term economy and a still very serious long-term debt threat," said Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., chairman of the Senate Budget Committee. "Congress cannot afford to ignore either challenge."
Most of the improvement in this year's deficit picture comes from higher than anticipated tax collections from 2010 returns filed in the spring. Over the longer term, the belt-tightening required in the new deficit reduction law will mean even bigger savings, the report says.
Deficits could end up larger if CBO's economic forecast, which is more optimistic than private projections, proves to be too rosy. The agency doesn't foresee another recession but modest economic growth over the next few years. And it expects the unemployment rate to fall only slightly, to 8.5 percent in the last three months of 2012, and staying above 8 percent through the following year.
"A great deal of the pain of this economic downturn still lies ahead of us," said CBO Director Douglas W. Elmendorf.
Democratic leaders say the report shows the need for programs and policies aimed at creating jobs. Republicans say the report is an indictment of Obama's economic policies.
"A slight decrease in the projected deficit is nothing to celebrate, particularly when it is accompanied by the grim news that CBO expects the national unemployment rate to continue to exceed 8 percent well past next year," said House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. "The president's policies were supposed to keep that from happening."
There is good news for the more than 50 million people who get Social Security benefits. After two years without a cost-of-living adjustment, the agency now projects a 2.8 percent COLA for 2012. That's up from the 1.1 percent increase the agency previously projected. The actual increase for 2012 will be announced in October. It is based on a measure of inflation.
At $1.28 trillion, this year's budget deficit would be the third highest, surpassed only by those of the past two years. The budget year runs through the end of September.
The new deficit projection for this year is $116 billion lower than the one made by CBO in March.
The new deficit reduction law accounts for most of the savings over the next decade: $917 billion in spending cuts already identified in the law, and at least $1.2 trillion in savings to be spelled out by the new joint committee. If the committee of six Republicans and six Democrats fails to agree on a package that is passed by Congress, the law would trigger $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts, affecting the Pentagon as well as domestic programs.
The budget office also projects $600 billion in savings over the next decade from lower interest rates.
"This CBO report shows that the budget control act signed by the president earlier this month brought down the deficit significantly, but much more work remains to be done," said Meg Reilly, speaking for the Office of Management and Budget. "We need to get back on a sustainable path and invest in long-term economic growth, which is why the president has called on Congress to take immediate action on pending legislation that will help create jobs."
