COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? After waiting for two days, Rebekah and Byron Largent learned from lists distributed by authorities that their home was among the hundreds that burned to the ground in the most destructive wildfire ever to rage across Colorado.

It was especially hurtful as their house was destroyed on their daughter Emma's first birthday.

"Our minds just started sifting through all the memories of that house that we lost that can't be replaced," Rebekah Largent said Thursday night. She remembered her wedding dress, a grandmother's china, the rocking chair where the couple would sit with Emma.

"Our little girl, our 1-year-old daughter, that's the house that she's lived in the longest. It's just really hard to have lost a lot of the memories connected to that, you know? They just burned," she said.

Officials said the Waldo Canyon fire that forced tens of thousands to flee this city 60 miles south of Denver destroyed an estimated 346 homes and left at least one person dead.

Police Chief Pete Carey said the remains of one person were found in a home where two people had been reported missing. Neither the victim nor the missing person has been identified.

Carey said police are still trying to track down the whereabouts of "less than 10" people who may be unaccounted for.

President Barack Obama was to tour fire-stricken areas Friday after issuing a disaster declaration for Colorado, releasing federal funds to help.

Rich Harvey, the incident commander in charge of the massive firefighting effort, said the fire was held at bay overnight, with no growth of the perimeter and no more houses lost.

The fire was 15 percent contained Friday morning.

Jerri Marr, supervisor of the Pike and San Isabel national forests where the blaze started, said favorable weather was a boon to firefighters Thursday.

"Yesterday we had great weather," she said. "Looks like we're going to have that same weather today."

From above Colorado Springs, the destruction was painfully clear: Rows and rows of houses were reduced to smoldering ashes even as some homes just feet away survived largely intact.

When he first saw the aerial photos of the homes burned in his neighborhood, Ryan Schneider recognized immediately that his house had been spared.

But relief quickly turned to sadness for his many friends and neighbors who hadn't been so lucky.

"I mean, there's a lifetime of things that people collect in these homes, and they've lost it all," said Schneider, vice president of the 1,700-home community association for the Mountain Shadows neighborhood.

Amid the devastation in the foothills of Colorado Springs, there were hopeful signs. Weather conditions improved Thursday and some evacuation orders were lifted by the evening, though there was no immediate word on how many people would be allowed back. People were told to still be ready to flee at a moment's notice.

The Air Force Academy was letting residents return Friday morning and officials said normal operations would resume throughout most of the academy.

"We're gaining more confidence," said Bret Waters, director of the Colorado Springs emergency management office. "It doesn't mean we're out of the woods."

More than 30,000 people frantically packed up belongings Tuesday night as the flames swept through their neighborhoods.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation said two people have been arrested in connection with a burglary at an evacuated home.

Community officials began the process of notifying residents Thursday that their homes were destroyed. The lists of more than 30 street names were posted at a local high school, listing those areas with heavy damage. Anxious residents scanned the sheets, but for many, the official notification was a formality. They recognized their street on aerial pictures and carefully scrutinize the images to determine the damage. Photos and video from The Associated Press and the Denver Post showed widespread damage.

Colorado Springs, the state's second-largest city, is home to the U.S. Olympic Training Center, NORAD and the Air Force Space Command, which operates military satellites. They were not threatened.

Conditions were still too dicey to allow authorities to begin trying to figure out what sparked the blaze that has raged for much of the week and already burned more than 26 square miles.

Authorities said earlier the fire was 29 square miles. More precise mapping often results in revisions of size estimates for active fires.

More than 1,000 personnel and six helicopters were fighting the fire, which had cost at least $3.2 million to fight.

All eight Air Force cargo planes equipped to fight wildfires will be operating Saturday out of Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, the Air Force said.

This will be the first time the entire fleet has been activated simultaneously since 2008, Col. Jerry Champlin said.

Four of the planes are already attacking Colorado wildfires from Peterson. Late Thursday, U.S. Northern Command approved a Forest Service request to activate the other four.

The C-130s are assigned to National Guard and Reserve units in California, Colorado, North Carolina and Wyoming.

Hundreds of people sought refuge at area shelters operated by the Red Cross, including tourists who'd come to enjoy the Colorado summer.

Preston Harrington, 40, of Lake Charles, La., had been hoping to climb nearby Pikes Peak.

He had been at a Manitou Springs motel when he was evacuated early Sunday, and then moved to a shelter at a high school and was living out of a suitcase

"No drawer, nothing to put this stuff in, it wears on you," Harrington said.

Schneider, the local neighborhood leader, said the enormity of the losses would take a while to sink in.

"There's a lot of tears being shed out there, it's tough," he said.

Among the fires elsewhere in the West:

? A 72-square-mile wildfire in central Utah has destroyed at least 56 structures and continues to burn with just 20 percent containment, authorities said. Officials expected the damage estimate to rise as they continue their assessment.

? The smaller fire near St. George, Utah, started Wednesday and had grown to 2,000 acres by midnight, forcing some residents to evacuate. The fire, which was 60 percent contained Friday, was burning about three miles north of Zion National Park. At least eight structures were destroyed.

? Fire crews in southeastern Montana used a break in the weather to dig containment lines around two wildfires that have burned 200 square miles and dozens of homes. The improved conditions led to residents clamoring to be let back in to check their properties and assess the damage, but authorities kept evacuation orders in place for hundreds of people.

? A Wyoming wildfire in the Bridger-Teton National Forest has grown from to nearly 36 square miles, officials said.

? In northern Colorado, about 1,900 people were allowed back into their homes on Thursday more than two weeks after the devastating High Park Fire erupted. The blaze was 85 percent contained. The fire killed one woman and destroyed 259 homes, authorities said Friday after the latest damage assessment. The destructive toll marked a state record until being eclipsed by the Colorado Springs fire.

? A wildfire gaining steam in western Colorado prompted officials to evacuate homes of about 50 residents in the southern part of De Beque as the 19-square-mile blaze threatened to cross Interstate 70 Thursday night. A 13-mile stretch of the highway was closed overnight but one lane in each direction reopened on Friday.

Prevent Dangerous Fireworks Accidents - San Jose Personal Injury ...

By San Jose Personal Injury Lawyer on June 27, 2012 -

Independence Day celebrations in San Jose and throughout all of California are known for their extensive use of fireworks to celebrate our country. And while these explosives are both patriotic and exhilarating, an accident can lead to life-altering injuries.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently released information showing that 65 percent of all 2011 fireworks injuries occurred on the 30 days surrounding July 4, with 9,600 consumers injured and four killed. Possible fireworks injuries include:

  • Burns to the head, face, ears, hands, eyes, and more;
  • Cuts;
  • Blinding;
  • Head trauma; and
  • Loss of limb.

There are many ways that a person can be hurt by fireworks, but many of the worst injuries come from home-made fireworks and the use of professional grade fireworks at home. Accidents related to these types of fireworks tend to be the worst as large explosions can result and cause serious and even fatal injuries. However, even sparklers and small firework cones have the ability to cause serious burn injuries due to the intense heat generated and the potential for the occurrence of a defective product explosion.

Independence Day Safety San Jose

Keep your family safe this holiday by practicing safe firework habits should you choose to use them at home. Keep a bucket of water nearby to douse all used and dud fireworks, keep children at a safe distance, and use common sense when handling the explosives. By following these rules, you and your family can enjoy an explosion-filled, but injury-free, Independence Day.

If you are injured in a fireworks accident caused by the negligence or recklessness of another party, you are entitled to seek compensation from the responsible party through a personal injury claim. At Van Der Walde & Associates, our San Jose burn accident injury lawyers have the years of experience and skills to understand the scope of your injuries and prove not only the guilt of the responsible party, but also the validity of the compensation you seek. Taliban release video of beheaded Pakistani soldiers

By Msnbc.com staff and wire services

The Taliban released a video Wednesday that they say shows the heads of 17 Pakistani soldiers captured in a cross-border raid from Afghanistan this week and then beheaded.

Meanwhile, a bomb in a railway station in Pakistan's southwest killed at least five people, police said.

A senior security official in Peshawar on Wednesday told the AFP the soldiers were targeted by?attackers from the eastern Afghan province of Kunar in a raid that began Sunday night.

?Six troops were killed on the first day, then another seven were slaughtered the next day,? the official told AFP.

?Four were missing and now they have also been beheaded,? he said.

The Pakistani Taliban's bloody cross-border raid showed the threat still posed by the group, despite multiple army offensives. Increasingly, the militants have used sanctuaries in eastern Afghanistan to attack border areas in Pakistan's northwest.

Taliban hostage siege at lakeside Kabul hotel leaves at least 23 dead

Pakistan has criticized NATO and Afghan forces for not doing enough to stop the attacks, but it has received little sympathy. The Afghan government and its allies have long faulted Pakistan for failing to target Afghan Taliban militants and their allies who use Pakistani territory to launch attacks in Afghanistan.

The Pakistani and Afghan Taliban are allies, but the former has focused on fighting the Pakistani government, while the latter has concentrated on attacking foreign and local forces in Afghanistan.

The Pakistani Taliban said in the video that they killed 18 soldiers, but 17 heads were displayed on a bloody white sheet on the ground. Several militants whose faces were covered were standing around the heads, holding weapons they said were captured from the soldiers.

Taliban bans Pakistan polio vaccinations over drone strikes

The Associated Press, which also reported the killings, said it obtained the video by email Wednesday from Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan.

?God has given us a great victory, we have killed them all. Four of the heads you can see are from Frontier Corps (paramilitary force), the rest are from the army,? an unseen commentator said in the video, according to the AFP report.

At the beginning of the video, a voice identified as that of Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud says the militants will continue to battle the army until Pakistan's government stops supporting the U.S. and enforces Islamic law throughout the country. It was unclear when the message was recorded.

The Pakistani military said previously that 13 troops were killed in the cross-border raid into the country's northwest Upper Dir region, and seven of them were beheaded. Four others were reported missing at the time. The military did not immediately respond to request for comment on the video.

The Pakistani Taliban and their allies have staged scores of bombings and other attacks against security forces and civilians in the country, killing thousands.

The railway station bombed Wednesday was located in Sibbi city in Baluchistan province, said police official Qasim Salachi. In addition to the five killed, 20 others were wounded, he said. The bomb went off just after a train had pulled into the station, and passengers were buying drinks and food.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Baluchistan has experienced decades of violence at the hands of separatists who demand a greater share of the province's natural resources. It is also believed to be a base of many Afghan Taliban militants.

In S.Africa: China #1 in head, US in heart

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa ? When Lebo Mothae speaks about the United States of America, she smiles brightly. ?If I could go to America that would be my dream ? just to be there!?

Mothae?s only contact with American people is when she encounters the crowds of tourists that she must cut through to walk her 4-year-old son from home to a nursery school?close to?Vilakazi Street in Soweto, the South African township.?The area is popular with visitors because it is the street where former President Nelson Mandela once lived and former Archbishop Desmond Tutu still has a home.

To Mothae, a 32-year-old nursery school teacher, the United States represents a beacon of relative racial harmony.

The U.S. and South Africa share a dark racial past, but South Africa?s is much more recent ? white minority rule by the apartheid regime ended when Mandela was released from prison in 1990 and became president in 1994 after the country?s first democratic elections.

And although Mothae questioned her belief in the American people during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the election of an African-American president in the U.S. renewed her hopes for racial equality at home and abroad.

?That election made me feel so warm about the American people,? she said.

Her faith in all things American was enhanced when first lady Michelle Obama visited South Africa last year, a trip that included a visit to Soweto.

?She?s a darling,? Mothae said. ?I remember the day and the time that she came to this side [South Africa]. She?s a nice lady. She?s quite down-to-earth. I like her.

?I see a mother ? a caring person. She?s devoted to what she?s doing. She is an icon for all black women in America, in South Africa and around the world.?

China means big money
But when Mothae talks of the future, and envisages the type of massive investment which might transform Soweto for her child?s generation, she speaks of China, not the United States.?

?China is the number one country because they produce so many things. So many things come from China. Even in America they have to go to China. That makes them the number one country.?

Lesego Seitisho, an unemployed IT administrator in Soweto, South Africa, talks about America.

Across Africa, the sudden emergence of massive Chinese investment, much of it in natural resources to satisfy the needs of its rapidly growing economy, has changed entire communities. Bilateral trade between China and Africa has grown exponentially ? particularly in just the last few decades.

In 1950 China-Africa bilateral trade was just $12 million, but by 1980, it topped $1 billion, according to China?s Ministry of Commerce. That number jumped over the last 30 years, with China-Africa trade volume reaching $114 billion by 2010, according to the Chinese.?Some analysts estimate that figure is likely to reach $300 billion by 2015.

The money has helped to build highways, stadiums and?parliament buildings across the continent ? while also taking away many of the continent?s natural resources. ?

Many leaders, including South Africa?s President Jacob Zuma, have been impressed by China?s enthusiasm for Africa as well as its perceived ?no strings attached? approach to investment.

Perhaps in response, U.S. President Barack Obama unveiled a new ?U.S. Strategy Toward Sub-Saharan Africa? earlier in June.

The strategy's most important objectives are ?strengthening democratic institutions and promoting economic growth, trade and investment,? according to the White House.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reinforced the idea of Africa as an ideal place for investment in the 21st century on the same day as Obama?s announcement.

?Africa offers the highest rate of return on foreign direct investment of any developing region in the world,? said Clinton. ?We in the United States like to talk about ourselves as the country that is the land of opportunity. It?s a point of national pride. Well, in the 21st century, Africa is the continent that is the land of opportunity.? ?

While the U.S. may have an uphill battle selling itself as an economic powerhouse, in terms of cultural influence, it still tops China.?

NBC News speaks with citizens from around the globe, asking the question, 'What Does America Mean to You?'

U.S. will always have Oprah and Beyonce
Close to Vilakazi Street, Ayanda Mchunu, a 26-year-old street-vendor, said his souvenir business has been boosted by a surge in Chinese tourists.

?I keep my eye out for the Americans and the Chinese; we think they have the most money,? he said.

And, despite the ascendancy of China, he said that the ?soft power? of the United States would endure through its cultural influence

?Even children ? they always talk about the U.S.?

?Most of the children, they watch films? The characters are from the U.S.,? Mchunu said. ?That?s why they?re inspired by the U.S.?

Nearby, Lesego Seitisho, a former IT administrator, was stopping passers-by in search of work after completing a contract with a Chinese company. He found his employer?s approach to workplace discipline enlightening and hopes to find a job with another Chinese firm.

But he believed that American culture and the popularity of celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Beyonce in South Africa give the United States influence that China could never match.

?America is on?TV all the time and when the TV?s off America is still switched on in your mind.?

?My head says that China is number one, my heart always says America.?

YouTube for Android 40 ends buffering on your favorite videos with precaching, adds remote

As Google I/O 2012 rolls along, the YouTube team is updating its Android app to v4.0 with a load of new features, but you'll need Android 4.0+ to take advantage of them (at least for now, see below). Available in 47 countries, the new app brings a brand new UI with support for channels that reflects the redesign rolled out on the website last year (not the circle-centric look that it is testing with a select few), and it can precache videos from your favorite channels for viewing later. All you have to do is select "preload" in the setting menu and it will pull down videos from your subscriptions and Watch Later queue when plugged in and on WiFi. To actually view them later you will still need to be online, but they'll load instantly from the device's storage instead of streaming.

Another new feature is integrated remote functionality to control playback on connected TVs and other devices. This apparently extends to more than just Google TV, as we're told to "expect more updates later" on how this feature will become broadly available. If you're not rocking the latest Android software don't freak out yet, as the team indicates these features will come to more devices later. Developers should be excited too as there's a slew of new YouTube APIs available, hit the source links below to check them out or download the app yourself.

Marine energy doubled by predicting wave power

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? The energy generated from our oceans could be doubled using new methods for predicting wave power. Research led by the University of Exeter, published (27 June) in the journal Renewable Energy, could pave the way for significant advancements in marine renewable energy, making it a more viable source of power.

The study was carried out by a team of mathematicians and engineers from the University of Exeter and Tel Aviv University. They devised a means of accurately predicting the power of the next wave in order to make the technology far more efficient, extracting twice as much energy as is currently possible.

Marine energy is believed to have the potential to provide the UK with electricity twice over. However, technologies to extract and convert energy from the sea are relatively immature, compared with solar or wind, and are not yet commercially competitive without subsidy. Very substantial progress has been made by the leading device developers, but key challenges remain: preventing devices being damaged by the hostile marine environment; and improving the efficiency of energy capture from the waves. This research addresses both problems by enabling control over the devices that extract wave energy. The key to this is to enable devices to accurately predict the power of the next wave and respond by extracting the maximum energy.

The research focused on point absorbers, commonly-used floating devices with parts that move in response to waves, generating energy which they feed back to the grid. Point absorbers are already known to be much more efficient in the amount of energy they produce if their response closely matches the force of the waves and previous research has looked at trying to increase this efficiency. However, this is the first study that has focused on increasing the device's efficiency by predicting and controlling internal forces of the device caused by forthcoming waves.

The team devised a system, which enables the device to extract the maximum amount of energy by predicting the incoming wave. This information enables a program to actively control the response required for a wave of a particular size. Because the device responds appropriately to the force of the next wave, it is far less likely to be damaged and would not need to be turned off in stormy conditions, as is currently the case.

Lead author Dr Guang Li of the University of Exeter said: "Our research has the potential to make huge advances to the progress of marine renewable energy. There are significant benefits to wave energy but progressing this technology has proved challenging. This is a major step forward and could help pave the way for wave energy to play a significant role in providing our power."

Co-author Dr Markus Mueller of the Environment and Sustainability Institute at the University of Exeter's Cornwall Campus said: "The next step is for us to see how effective this approach could be at a large scale, by testing it in farms of Wave Energy Converters."

Kochs, Cato Institute ready to end lawsuits

(AP) ? The Cato Institute and billionaire shareholders Charles and David Koch announced Monday that they are close to settling two lawsuits brought by the prominent political donor brothers in their native Kansas over the ownership of the libertarian-leaning think tank based in Washington.

The parties announced that they have an "agreement in principle" that would restructure the institute, a research organization that promotes free-market, small-government policies. The Cato Institute would get a new CEO within six months; it would be governed by member-directors; and it would no longer have shareholders. Charles Koch would no longer be a director, but David Koch would remain as one.

The Koch brothers, known nationally for supporting conservative causes and candidates, are longtime shareholders in the institute. They filed their lawsuits earlier this year in Kansas, arguing that it has jurisdiction because the institute lists an office in the Kansas City suburb of Johnson County.

The parties issued a joint statement Monday saying they'll ask a judge to put the litigation on hold after settlement documents are signed. Eventually, they expect to seek the dismissal of the lawsuits.

The agreement would mean the departure of Ed Crane, who's been CEO for more than three decades. John Allison, the former chief executive officer of BB&T Corp., the banking and financial holding company based in Winston-Salem, N.C., will replace him.

"I have every confidence that John's leadership will enable Cato to reach new levels of effectiveness," Charles Koch said in a statement. "Effective action is required to limit government to its proper role."

Crane had accused the Koch brothers of attempting to engineer a "hostile takeover" of the institute and endangering its independence. The Koch brothers said they were trying to make sure the organization remained effective and operated under the terms of shareholder agreements dating back to 1977.

The outgoing CEO praised the selection of Allison and said the institute would remain a "non-partisan, non-aligned, independent source of libertarian perspectives on public policy."

The Koch brothers' first lawsuit, filed in March, centered on the 25 percent ownership interest in the Cato Institute previously held by William Niskanen, who retired as chairman in 2008 and died in October. The Koch brothers contended that under shareholders' agreements in 1977 and 1985, Niskanen's widow couldn't control his ownership interest and must give his shares back to the institute. That would have left only the Koch brothers and Crane as shareholders.

The second lawsuit, filed in April, involved an expansion of the institute's board of directors, which the Koch brothers sought to block. It named the institute and four directors as defendants.

Under the agreement, Cato's board would have 12 directors, including David Koch, and the Koch brothers would designate an additional three directors. Allison would be an additional board member and could nominate one or two additional directors. Crane would not be a director.

In its latest annual report, the Cato Institute listed 123 employees and an annual budget of about $21 million, with more than 80 percent of its funds coming from individual contributors. Crane and Charles Koch are listed as founding the institute in 1977.

Charles Koch, a Wichita resident, is chairman and CEO of Koch Industries Inc., which has about 67,000 employees worldwide and $110 billion in annual revenues, with interests that include oil refineries, fertilizer, chemicals, paper and pollution-control equipment. David Koch, who lives in New York, is the company's executive vice president. Koch Industries is not involved in the litigation.

The Koch brothers are frequent targets of criticism from progressive groups over their political activities. The small-government, anti-tax group Americans for Prosperity was founded with their support.

No referendum for Germany on EU - The Local

A referendum in Germany on transferring more sovereignty to the European level will not happen anytime soon it was announced on Monday, after being raised in an interview with the country's finance minister.

"We are of the view that much can and will be done in Europe using the [existing] legal basis," spokesman Steffen Seibert told a news conference.

"But these debates are for tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, not for today," he added.

Seibert was reacting to an interview given by Finance Minister Wolfgang Sch?uble in Monday's edition of Spiegel news magazine, in which he said: "One can give more power to Brussels but the German people will have to have their say."

"That could happen sooner than I thought a few months ago," Sch?uble added, saying such a popular vote was conceivable within the next five years.

Sch?uble, one of Europe's most experienced politicians, reiterated his idea that the 27-nation EU needed to be much more like a country in its own right.

"The [European] Commission should become a genuine government and for that it needs to be elected by the parliament or by the direct election of its president. I am for the second option," he told Spiegel.

Seibert said that Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has repeated frequently her belief that more Europe, not less, is the correct response to the crisis, broadly shared Sch?uble's analysis.

"The chancellor completely shared the basic thinking [of Sch?uble], that more integration is necessary," Seibert said.

Turlock Sikh parade to advance outreach effort

-- The Turlock Sikh Temple is sponsoring what organizers are calling Stanislaus County's first Sikh parade here Sunday.

Harinder Grewal, an agriculture inspector for the county and a member of the Turlock Unified School Board, said he hopes the parade becomes an annual event, as is common for Sikh temples. Livingston, a few miles to the south, has a large Sikh parade every spring.

"This is another way to reach out to all the communities," Grewal said. "It's one day where everybody is going to get together and celebrate culture."

In addition to the members of the temple and their friends and family, Grewal said he hopes the parade draws a large and diverse crowd.

The Turlock Sikh population has been growing; last year, the community opened a new 20,000-square foot temple in Turlock that's two stories tall, with room for the temple's 2,000 members. The previous building was so small that people had to take turns to worship.

Community outreach has increased along with that growth: Grewal hosted a public discussion earlier this year that included elected and law enforcement officials from around the region.

They're invited back on Sunday, Grewal said.

"I strongly believe that again reaching out to everyone, getting together and sharing with everyone will help all the communities to understand each other."

Sunday's parade will start at noon at the temple, 1373 Fifth St. at East Linwood Avenue, in Turlock. Refreshments will be provided. Call (209) 632-4653.

Pitsfield Fourth of July Parade gets fundraising boost

Saturday June 23, 2012

PITTSFIELD -- Online donations have helped boost fundraising for the Pittsfield Fourth of July Parade.

Less than two weeks before the Independence Day celebration, organizers said on Thursday the $55,000 raised to date has picked up and is ahead of last year?s pace for late June. In mid-May, the Pittsfield Fourth of July Parade Committee was reporting it was running behind.

Parade coordinator Peter M. Marchetti credits, in part, the committee accepting contributions through the group?s website for the first time.

"By utilizing PayPal, we have received at least $3,000 in donations," Marchetti said.

Potential donors can go to www.pittsfieldparade.com to make a contribution or mail a check to the parade committee at P.O. Box 1738, Pittsfield, MA 01202.

Meanwhile, the parade has lined up 150 parade units, among the highest participation in years, according to Marchetti. He said there will be 10 floats, 21 local and regional bands, area military veterans organizations, police and fire departments and political dignitaries.

In keeping with the parade theme of "Movie Classics," the parade committee recently named four current and former downtown movie theaters as the grand marshals. Marchetti expects representatives from The Beacon Cinema, Little Cinema at the Berkshire Museum, Colonial Theatre, and Barrington Stage Co. to march in the parade.

"We are thrilled and excited

to be part of this huge parade," said Kate Maguire, artistic director and CEO for Berkshire Theatre Group, which manages the Colonial Theatre.

"I just love a parade," she added.

The quartet of grand marshals has also symbolizes the city?s downtown revitalization efforts, according to parade committee President Betsy Bean.

"The committee felt it made sense to do a ?tip of the hat? to honor the rebirth of downtown Pittsfield ... a large part of the reason for increased economic activity and growth in the city," Bean said.

In addition, the parade poster depicts the Palace Theatre surrounded by movie characters, paying homage to one of the three former movie theaters on North Street -- The Capitol Theatre and Showplace being the other two.

The parade will begin at the intersection of South and West Housatonic streets at 10 a.m. on July 4 and follow a route established three years ago. The participants will march straight from South Street to North Street via the southbound lane and proceed from North to Wahconah Street, ending at Wahconah Park.

Yankees won't play chicken with Mets' Francisco

By HOWIE RUMBERG

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:19 p.m. ET June 22, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter looked at the front page of a tabloid, the one that had a composite photo of his smiling face atop a chicken's body and the headline "Cluck You!"

He just shook his head.

"What happened?" Jeter asked.

What happened was that Mets closer Frank Francisco told the New York Post this week, "I can't wait to face those chickens" before his team hosted the crosstown rival Yankees in a three-game series starting Friday night at Citi Field.

Jeter and his teammates were more confused by the comment than upset by it.

"I can't be insulted by something I don't understand," Jeter said.

With a big grin, teammate Nick Swisher added: "I don't even know what it means. ... I don't even know what to say."

Alex Rodriguez wanted to know what kind of chicken: "I like mine grilled."

Francisco did not chicken out Friday afternoon, explaining what he meant by his odd comment. He said he thinks the Yankees often protest the umpires' calls.

"I (made) a simple comment because they complain a lot for everything," Francisco said.

In his first season with the Mets, the closer did not pitch when the Yankees swept the Subway Series in the Bronx from June 8-10. But he told the Post he is excited to have a chance to strike out the side in the final series of the regular season between the teams.

Francisco has done it before, whiffing Jeter, Rodriguez and Jason Giambi in the seventh inning on May, 21, 2004, for the Texas Rangers.

Yankees catcher Russell Martin, who hit a game-ending homer off Mets reliever Jon Rauch on June 10, dismissed the comments.

"We'll see if we're chicken when he gets in the game," Martin said.

Francisco got his shot at the Yankees in the ninth. And although he didn't strike out the side, he still got the job done. The right-hander worked a scoreless inning to close out the Mets' 6-4 victory, retiring Mark Teixeira on a game-ending popup with two runners aboard for his 18th save in 21 chances.

Never has chicken played so prominent a role in a Yankees story line since the fake George Steinbrenner agreed to trade George Costanza to Tyler Chicken for a fermented chicken drink and other poultry products on an episode of "Seinfeld."

On Friday, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said three chicken companies inquired about sponsoring the Subway Series this weekend.

Mets manager Terry Collins isn't about to start disciplining his players for speaking their minds.

"I'm not going to hang out in the clubhouse and watch what guys say," Collins said. "We're grown men. Frank, if that's the way he feels - I don't think he meant to stir the pot when we played these guys. They're good enough already. It is what it is."

Girardi doesn't think his team needs extra motivation.

"It doesn't really mean anything," Girardi said. "What means something is what you do on the field."

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? Talk about a ticking clock: when this romance begins, the near-future world is about to end.

When a laser that?s been sent to space to protect Earth from a 70-mile-wide asteroid that?s rushing toward it fails to do so, people start preparing for the impending apocalypse, the end of humankind.

(2? stars out of 4)

Thus begins the offbeat final-days comedy-drama, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, in which people are told that they have three weeks to live.

Steve Carell plays Dodge Petersen, a soft-spoken insurance salesman whose wife, when she hears the devastating news, bolts from their car and their marriage.

When Dodge?s friends begin throwing caution to the wind and start acting reckless because, well, why bother following any rules at this point, Dodge keeps playing by the rules of civility.

He even takes in a stray dog.

Keira Knightley is Penny Lockhart, a British upstairs neighbor of Dodge?s whom he has never even spoken to, a free spirit and incurable romantic who?s involved with a self-absorbed musician who mistreats her.

As Dodge and Penny get to know each other, Penny delivers a letter to him that was incorrectly delivered to her apartment and that she never bothered to give him.

He?s aghast when he reads it to discover that it was from the love of his life, the only woman he ever really loved, the one who got away, and that now it?s probably too late to do anything about it.? And it?s Penny?s fault.

So, with neighbors looting at will, Dodge and Penny decide to follow through on Penny?s suggestion that he try to find his original sweetheart while she attempts to reconnect with her family.? That?s why they get out of Dodge and hit the road somewhere in Southern California, heading east in search of their lost loved ones.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World juggles genre, starting out as an edgy, satirical black comedy, then becoming a quirky road flick, and eventually ending up a melancholy romantic drama.? Not, as they say, that there?s anything wrong with that.

Debuting director Lorene Scafaria (who wrote Nick and Nora?s Infinite Playlist), working from her own script, sets up her premise efficiently and economically, without a lost of fuss, and in the process shows us a distinctive directorial hand in the early moments.

But then she switches hands, and tones, and genre.? When the intensity dips noticeably, we tell ourselves that it?s not the end of the world.? And then we realize: oh, wait, well, yes it is.

An able supporting cast -? including William Petersen, Melanie Lynskey, Adam Brody, Patton Oswalt, Connie Britton, Rob Corddry, and Derek Luke ?- helps make the heavyhearted trip sufficiently pleasant.? But it?s the leads who remain in the driver?s seat.

The chemistry between Carell and a deglamorized Knightley, while not ample, is sufficient for the film?s purposes.? They may not quite make us feel the inevitability of where things go, but they certainly connect.

Still, it?s Carell on his own who really impresses, enormously sympathetic in a beautifully modulated, low-key performance (more dramatic than comedic, when you come right down to it) in which he uses his deadpan style to convey the palpable pain that he?s in.

Like the record that Penny plays at one point, the film gets stuck here and there, but not enough to make you wish you weren?t there.

So we?ll count down to 2? stars out of 4 for Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, a bittersweet but not gloomy romantic dramedy that will at the very least stop you from seeking an exit for the end of the movie.
