A well chosen domain name is the mark of a professional website. Anyone can register a domain name and it only takes a few minutes. This article aims to inform the reader of just how to register a domain name. The major steps in registering a domain name consist of choosing one, finding a domain registrar, registering the domain and finally pointing it to the appropriate name servers of a website.

The first step to registering a domain name is actually choosing one. A domain should fall into one of two major categories. It should either be keyword-centric of brand-centric. As far as the specifics of domain names go, they must start with a letter and they can be composed of numbers, letters or a combination of the two. Domain names may also have dashes.

Keyword-centric domains will be focused more on a certain keyword for search engine optimization purposes. Typically smaller websites use these types of domains. When choosing this type of domain to register, often times the exact match domain will be taken. If this happens, feel free to use dashes between words or a permutation of the previously taken keyword.

Brand-centric domain names will focus on making and selling a brand. Sometimes the keyword that the website owner wishes to focus on will be located in the domain name.

It is important to remember to avoid choosing trademarked or copyrighted phrases. The proper holders of each term can later file legal action and force the domain name to be given to them by a court if they are found to contain such a term.

The second step is to find a domain name registrar. There are several hundred companies that can offer the service of registering a domain name. Some companies are also cheaper than others.

The third step is to pick a domain extension and check to see if your chosen domain is available. If it isn?t, then another domain name will have to be chosen. The only exception to this is if the current owner of an already-owned domain feels like selling the rights to another person. Generally this involves a fair amount of cash compared to what it would cost to simply register a new domain name.

If one domain name is taken, try looking for the same name with a different domain extension. The recommended choices are ?.com?, ?.org?, ?.biz? and ?.net? for most business websites. Just about any top -level domain is available so long as the owner will let it be used. The only major top-level domains reserved for certain websites are ?.gov? and ?.edu? domains. The former is reserved for government websites and the latter for places of education like universities and schools.

The one word of advice towards top-level domains for a new domain is to stay away from ?.info? domains. These top-level domains may be much less costly than other domains, but that also makes them a target to be used by spammers. The last thing that a website owner would want is for their website to be grouped with spammers solely based on the top-level domain.

The fourth step is to actually register the available domain in question with the registrar. The registrar will generally have to be paid money to complete this action and should be paid for the number of years the registering party intends to keep the domain name. This also requires that the purchaser either put in valid personal information or arrange a private registration using the registrar. Either way, valid information is required in case a domain name dispute arises.

The last step in how to register a domain name is pointing the domain to a web host?s nameservers. This is done in order to resolve a name to an IP address and further an actual website. If the registering party of a domain does not have a website host, most registrars offer that service for a nominal monthly fee.

Rumor: Facebook To Buy Opera Software To Join Browser Wars

Okay take this with some skepticism as there is no official confirmation about this yet, and the only source for the article is an unnamed one. According to web magazine Pocket-Lint, Facebook is considering buying the Norwegian company Opera Software, which developers the Opera web browser for various platforms.

Opera Software, which had a very strong q1 financially is known for the Opera desktop browser, one the two major browsers that is not backed by a multi-billion Dollar company (the other is Mozilla), the mobile versions of the browser. Recently, the company has also made further investments in the advertisement space, improving the impressions served to 86 billion in the first quarter of 2012.

A Facebook owned Opera browser would provide Facebook with additional revenue possibilities, and save it from creating a browser of their own. And Opera?s experience in the mobile market could improve Facebook?s presence here, both app-wise but also advertising-wise.

For Opera it could mean additional manpower and development funds to develop the browsers in a faster pace.

It is the users that may have issues with the acquisition, if the rumor should turn out to be true, considering that a Facebook browser would certainly make some changes that the devoted community may not be pleased with at all. One change could be the tight integration with Facebook, another that certain features of the browser may be modified or retired completely to streamline it further.

So how realistic is the rumor? Opera Software is a public company with a revenue of about 160 million in the last four quarters. It is definitely a possibility that Facebook would make an offer for the company if it is really interested in getting into the browser market. It is actually the only company with a market share of more than 1% that is available at all, as the top 4 remaining companies are owned by Microsoft, Apple, Google and Mozilla, who all would not even think of selling their browser to Facebook.

For now I?d say it is unlikely that Facebook will buy Opera Software, and the main reason for that is that the source has not been mentioned. For all I know, this could be some form of link-baiting. What is your take?

CARSON, Calif. (AP) - Juan Agudelo scored his first goal for Chivas USA in a 1-1 draw with Seattle on Saturday night.

Agudelo was playing his second match for Chivas (4-6-3) since being dealt from the New York Red Bulls. He scored in the 57th minute on a cross from former Sounders defender James Riley.

David Estrada scored four minutes later on a cross from Alex Caskey to tie the game. It was Estrada's fifth goal of the season.

Seattle (7-3-3) haven't won in four games.

Meet Greg Pass, former chief technology officer of Twitter ? and the new ambassador of tech for New York City.

Pass today announced he is joining Cornell's New York tech campus as its founding entrepreneurial officer ? responsible for tracking down top prospective entrepreneurial talent and training them in New York City.

Pass advised city officials and Cornell representatives throughout the whole proposal process to bring a huge tech campus to New York. Now he's going to be a huge part of it.?

Why is this a big deal? We caught up with pass to find out what he's working on. Here's what we learned:

• Pass is great at finding and hiring talent. He was responsible for hundreds of hires at Twitter after he became CTO of the company.

• The program will be a mix of academia and Y Combinator apprenticeship. Advisors will be working very closely with each student.

• New York tech is booming, and mayor Michael Bloomberg has a keen interest on seeing it succeed. That's why the city is making a huge deal out of this New York tech campus.

BUSINESS INSIDER: Why now? Why did you guys decide to make a huge push for New York tech?

Greg Pass: The idea is for the new program, is that we really ought to have someone specifically focused making sure that the academic program and industry partnerships will successfully result in entrepreneurial value for students and faculty and the New York tech community. It's a new role for the university, it's gonna be my job to make sure that happens.

Bloomberg was the initial impetus. He was ready for a university, to give the land on the island and a few other potential spots to a university. This proposal process went on for much of last year. That's when I got involved, early in the proposal process. They reached out to me, so I advised the end of the proposal process and over the course of the last year after I left Twitter I started getting more and more invested in this project and feeling positive about it. The more we talked about it the more it was clear that a role like this could help the success of the program.

BI: What was your role at Twitter? How will that help you out here??

GP: My experience was building the team at Twitter. Over the course at the three years, half of my job was interviewing and hiring and putting the team together. I probably interviewed a thousand engineers and hired hundreds. It became more and more clear the impact talented entrepreneurs and engineers can have on a thriving organization. But those engineers are very difficult to find ??not only in New York, but in Silicon Valley. Hiring that type of engineer is rare and hard.

I see this as a unique opportunity to give back to my profession and figure out how to better cultivate the types of students interested in making an impact. How can we actually educate those types of students better and give them a better education to increase the size and quality of the talent pool.

Being based in New York is gonna have a big impact on New York's tech scene.

BI: What are some of the traits of New York's tech scene that jump out to you right now??

GP: I think a very impressive piece of evidence came out last week in the Center for Urban Studies New Tech city report. They did a lot of research across the country in a number of ways of measuring the tech profile of different regions. One of the striking measurements in there is the new york region was the only region in the United States with positive growth in the number of venture capital deals. It's higher than Silicon Valley and other regions like Austin. That's not absolute numbers of course, the Valley has a much greater amount of investment dollars, but it shows a surge is happening in New York.?

The things that impress me the most are the startups that, to me, feel very New York in character and culture. For example, Fancy, you could relate that to Ad Tech in a creative way. We are an advertising hub and there's a lot that could be done to back it technologically. Readability is an interesting example of a design tech company that really also reflects the strength of New York in particular. Kickstarter jumps out to me, a finance and tech play. Art.sy is interesting, it's an art and tech play.

BI: Why did you end up leaving Twitter and what brought you to this opportunity?

GP: Working and building a new academic program is not what I expected to be doing. I was blindsided by the opportunity, it's an opportunity to build a new kind of school from the ground up. It's in New York and New York is surging right now, and I don't know how to say no to that new opportunity. It's also working with?Dan Huttenlocher, who I've known for a long time, and also this team we're going to build. There's so much interest and excitement in this project. The team we can put together is gonna be phenomenal. I think also, I've been fortunate to have some success as an entrepreneur, and I think it's important that when opportunities come up to give back to that profession in some way.

I came to Twitter through the acquisition of Summize. Myself and the other co-founders, which pivoted into a real-time search engine, we were connected to Twitter practically. We knew the venture capitalists who found them at Union Square, like Fred and Brad. That deal just made a lot of sense from the user's point of view. That happened very quickly. Once there, I took over the leadership of the engineering team.

BI: What do you think of some of the other alternative education forms, like Khan Academy?

GP: I love Codecademy and others in that space are a perfect complement of what we're trying to do in the new school. There's not just one education model that fits all, there are some of those startups that can be breaking through to gain proficiencies in a lot of areas. With a grad school, we're talking something more akin to an apprenticeship. You're sourced with an industry advisor who's literally invested in your success and paying attention to your success. That's a different level of mastery.

Cornell Tech is somewhere in between academia with industry experiences, a lot of the things that would happen at Y Combinator, a lot of the types of experiences you'd get there would be part of this program. There would also be an academic curriculum because students would be entering with a master of their field as well as entrepreneurial experiences. I could see if things like Khan Academy are successful, as students enter the traditional academy, learning on your own will be part of the expectation

BI: What's the profile of a student you're looking for??

GP: We want to bring students that are specifically interested in making a difference and having an impact on technological innovation and are entrepreneurial. They won't all start companies themselves, but they want to be part of a creative organization that wants to change the world. That's the kind of student I came into contact with a lot at Twitter. Certainly I looked for that at Twitter, that changes over time though. The kind of person you look for when you have 15 engineers than when you're scaling rapidly. But certainly the most impressive thing is when you hire those key creative and entrepreneurial engineers that have an asymmetric impact on the company.

Eugene Polley, inventor of TV remote, dies at 96

CHICAGO (AP) ? Couch potatoes everywhere can pause and thank Eugene Polley for hours of feet-up channel surfing. His invention, the first wireless TV remote, began as a luxury, but with the introduction of hundreds of channels and viewing technologies it has become a necessity.

Just ask anyone who's lost a remote.

Polley died of natural causes Sunday at a suburban Chicago hospital, said Zenith Electronics spokesman John Taylor. The former Zenith engineer was 96.

In 1955, if you wanted to switch TV channels from "Arthur Godfrey" to "Father Knows Best," you got up from your chair, walked across the room and turned a knob. Clunk. Clunk. Clunk.

Or you could buy a new Zenith television with Flash-Matic tuning. The TV came with a green ray gun-shaped contraption with a red trigger. The advertising promised "TV miracles." The "flash tuner" was "Absolutely harmless to humans!" Most intriguing of all: "You can even shut off annoying commercials while the picture remains on the screen."

Polley was proud of his invention even late in life, Taylor said. He showed visitors at his assisted-living apartment his original Flash-Matic and how it had evolved into the technology of today. "He was a proud owner of a flat-screen TV and modern remote," Taylor said. "He always kept his original remote control with him."

Polley's Flash-Matic pointed a beam of light at photo cells in the corners of the television screen. Each corner activated a different function, turning the picture and sound off and on, and changing the channels.

Chicago native Polley and fellow Zenith engineer Robert Adler were honored in 1997 with an Emmy for their work in pioneering TV remotes. In 2009, he received the Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award from the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers.

Beyond keeping TV viewers pinned to their chairs, Polley's invention unchained technology from mechanical knobs and levers, opening vast possibilities, said Richard Doherty, CEO of suburban New York-based technology assessment and market research company Envisioneering.

"Without his idea you might not have gotten to the Internet," Doherty said. "It allowed you to go beyond the physical dial. It set the pace for dozens for follow-on inventions that go beyond the physical."

During his 47-year career as an engineer, Polley earned 18 U.S. patents. At Zenith, he worked his way up from the stockroom, according to a biography from Lincolnshire, Ill.-based LG Electronics, which owns Zenith. Polley also worked on radar advances for the U.S. Department of Defense during World War II. He helped develop the push-button radio for automobiles and the video disk, a forerunner of today's DVD.

Polley's invention made life easier ? perhaps too easy ? for a generation of children.

"In my house, the remote control was named Rick," said Doherty. "'Rick, change it to Channel 7. Rick, change it to Channel 2. Rick, go back to the ballgame.' It kept me fitter as a kid."

Report: Foxconn spending $210 million on Apple production line

China Daily is claiming that Foxconn will pump $210 million into building a production line in China's Jiangsu province. Local authorities have stated that the plant in Huai'an city will produce components for Apple, no doubt heralding a raft of rampant speculation as to Cupertino's intentions. Retirement may be a long way off for you ? or it might be right around the corner. No matter how near or far it is, you?ve absolutely got to start saving for it now. Let?s start by taking a look at the retirement plan offered by your company. Once upon a time, these plans were quite sound. However, after the Enron upset and all that followed, people aren?t as secure in their company retirement plans anymore. If you choose not to invest in your company?s retirement plan, you do have other options.

First, you can invest in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, certificates of deposit, and money market accounts. You do not have to state to anybody that the returns on these investments are to be used for retirement. Just simply let your money grow overtime, and when certain investments reach their maturity, reinvest them and continue to let your money grow.

You can also open an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). IRA?s are quite popular because the money is not taxed until you withdraw the funds. You may also be able to deduct your IRA contributions from the taxes that you owe. An IRA can be opened at most banks. A ROTH IRA is a newer type of retirement account. With a Roth, you pay taxes on the money that you are investing in your account, but when you cash out, no federal taxes are owed. Roth IRA?s can also be opened at a financial institution.

Another popular type of retirement account is the 401(k). 401(k?s) are typically offered through employers, but you may be able to open a 401(k) on your own. You should speak with a financial planner or accountant to help you with this. The Keogh plan is another type of IRA that is suitable for self employed people. Self-employed small business owners may also be interested in Simplified Employee Pension Plans (SEP). This is another type of Keogh plan that people typically find easier to administer than a regular Keogh plan.

Whichever retirement investment you choose, just make sure you choose one! Again, do not depend on social security, company retirement plans, or even an inheritance that may or may not come through! Take care of your financial future by investing in it today.

Honda launches 'Dream Yuga,' its cheapest bike | DailyFT - Be ...

Reuters: Honda Motor Co launched the lowest-cost motorbike in its line-up last week for sale in the India market, aiming to double India?s share of its motorcycle revenue by the end of the decade while racing to catch up with rivals in fast-growing emerging markets.

Honda, the world?s largest motorcycle manufacturer and Japan?s third-biggest carmaker, has struggled to make major inroads in high-growth, price-sensitive markets such as India, where a former joint venture deal once excluded it from the key commuter motorbike segment.
Commuter bikes account for around 70 percent of India?s motorcycle market, which grew 14 percent over the last financial year to 10 million sold and is second only to China.
?It?s very positive for Honda that they can finally compete in the mass market here,? said Vineet Hetamasaria, automotive analyst at PINC Research in Mumbai.
?The pricing is in the right area ? and given Honda?s brand equity, the bike is definitely going to make a dent in the market shares of others.?
The motorcycle is Honda?s cheapest worldwide, Keita Muramatsu, president of Honda Motorycle & Scooter India, said at the bike?s launch in New Delhi. Honda, the top seller of scooters in the Indian market but lagging in larger commuter bikes, has been steadily raising production and sales across the two-wheeler segment since it ended a 26-year joint venture with Hero MotoCorp in March of last year in an $851 million deal.
It has since announced fresh investment worth 20 billion rupees as it looks to chase down Hero, its former partner and the current market leader in commuter motorcycles.
The Japanese company is constructing its third two-wheeler factory in the country and overtook Bajaj Auto as the country?s No. 2 in two-wheeler sales in March. Honda expects India to account for 30 percent of its global motorcycle revenue by 2020, up from 13 percent now, Muramatsu said.
The Japanese automaker, which also builds cars in India, has been less aggressive than global rivals such as General Motors Co and Volkswagen AG in targeting emerging markets such as India and China.
It abandoned a one-size-fits-all global parts sourcing approach in its car business in 2010 to search for local suppliers for its global plants to help it reduce costs.
Dressed in a Honda T-shirt, Bollywood acting heart-throb Akshay Kumar unveiled the 110cc Dream Yuga motorcycle on Tuesday, touting the advantages of a motorbike over a car on the clogged roads of India?s cities.
Sales of motorbikes, a family vehicle for millions of Indians, outstripped car sales by five to one in the last financial year, partly helped by high interest rates and fuel costs that pushed up the price of automobile ownership.
?India will be the most important market and will continue to be in focus for the next 10 years,? said Yadvinder Singh Guleria, marketing head for Honda India. He added that Honda expected to boost exports from India to 150,000 two-wheelers in the year to March 2013 from 111,000 the year before. Globally, two-wheelers accounted for about one-sixth of Honda?s revenue in the latest financial year to March 2012. Other Japanese motorcycle makers are also ramping up capacity and targeting volumes in India.
Yamaha Motor Co this week announced a new $280 million factory in India to nearly triple capacity to 2.8 million motorcycles by 2018, while Suzuki Motor Corp, which will likely launch a mass-market offering this month, is building a new factory to take its India capacity to close to 1 million motorcycles by 2014.
