Enumclaw's Salsbury wins Puget Sound Amateur golf tournament

Enumclaw native Tyler Salsbury, preparing for his sophomore year at the University of Washington, posted a sterling 5-under 139 to win the 48th Annual Puget Sound Amateur by two shots over David Talcott, whose final round 69 wasn?t enough to catch the front-runner.

Ninety-nine players battled Pierce County's two championship courses over two days, May 18-19.

Lake Spanaway Golf Course hosted day one under cloudy, drizzling skies and proved a worthy adversary with only three players in the field under par. Lake Spanaway?s tree-lined fairways and traditional Northwest greens were no match for Salsbury as he toured the golf course in 68 strokes to hold the first-day lead by two over Thomas Jun. Heavy afternoon showers made scoring difficult and all players were looking for a drier day at Chambers Bay.

Chambers Bay, the site of the 2015 United States Open, welcomed the players for the final round under dry and warm conditions. Scoring proved difficult as the links-style layout designed by Robert Trent Jones II lived up to its championship? reputation. The undulating greens made every putt a challenge and although Talcott made a run with a final round 69, Salsbury finished with a 1-under par 71 for the victory.

Crews comb devastation in Oklahoma; confirmed death toll lowered ...

Destroyed vehicles lie in the rubble outside the Plaza Towers Elementary school in Moore, Okla., on Tuesday.

By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News

As evening drew to a close in Oklahoma, after a day of tireless searching for survivors among the debris left behind by a powerful tornado, officials said the operation would end by nightfall Tuesday.

"We will be through every damaged piece of property in this city at least three times before we're done and we hope to be done by dark tonight," Moore Fire Chief Gary Bird said at a news conference.

Emergency crews and National Guard troops picked through neighborhoods without recognizable streets in a grim, house-by-house search of the blasted-out husk of a city left behind by the ferocious tornado.

Authorities lowered the death toll to 24, less than half the figure they gave in the initial chaos after the twister, but there was still no full accounting of those missing. Nine of the confirmed dead were children, including seven in a flattened elementary school.

Four bodies were recovered, including a 3-month-old baby, at a local 7-Eleven.

Working with search dogs and under menacing skies, the crews meticulously combed the rubble in the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore, which took a direct hit when the tornado cut a 17-mile path of destruction on Monday afternoon.

Dozens of people were pulled from the wreckage in the initial hours after the storm, but there were no reports of additional survivors found Tuesday ? only scraps of wood, shreds of clothing, shards of glass and metal and cars crumpled into each other and into buildings. Entire stretches of Moore looked as if they had been put through a blender.

?I mean, there?s nothing,? said Robert Foster, whose family home was destroyed. ?People are walking up and down the streets. It?s really upsetting to look at. We grew up there. That?s our whole childhood. And it?s all flattened now.?

Gov. Mary Fallin said there were 237 injured, but authorities cautioned that figure and the death toll could still rise. Even with the benefit of a full day?s light, people were only beginning to grasp the scope of the destruction in Moore and parts of Oklahoma City.

The Oklahoma University Medical Center admitted 59 children and 34 adults.

The National Weather Service said survey crews had found at least one area of Category EF5 damage ? the highest classification for tornadoes, meaning winds had exceeded 200 mph.

Frank Keating, a former Oklahoma governor, said on MSNBC that as many as 20,000 families could be displaced.

?This was the storm of storms,? Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett said.

The first of the victims was publicly identified ? Ja?Nae Hornsby, a third-grader who was killed when the tornado demolished Plaza Towers Elementary School. She was remembered by her family Tuesday as full of joy and fond of playing dress-up. Her relatives gathered at a Baptist church in Oklahoma City to console each other.

A second victim, Hemant Bhonde, 65, became separated from his wife when the tornado struck their home, his family told NBC News. Bhonde's body was recovered Tuesday, hospital officials said. His wife survived.

Firefighters examine the rubble of a home in a destroyed neighborhood in Moore.

As they took the measure of what they had lost, people in Moore also marveled that they were alive, and began to share stories of survival and of how they protected each other when the twister struck, announcing itself with roaring wind.

Children from Plaza Towers Elementary School, where seven children were reported drowned in a pool of water, told of hearing sirens and running into a hall for cover, some still carrying their math books.

A teacher, Rhonda Crosswhite, said she huddled with students in a bathroom stall and draped herself over them for cover as the storm hit.

?One of my little boys, he just kept saying, ?I love you, I love you, please don?t die with me, please don?t die with me,?? she told TODAY. ?But we?re OK. And we made it out, and it finally stopped.?

She said all her students were accounted for.

Damian Britton, a fourth-grader, credited ?Miss Crosswhite? with saving his life. He estimated it took about five minutes for the twister to pass through before the students emerged from cover to survey the damage and check on their classmates.

?It was just a disaster,?? he said. ?There was just a bunch of stuff thrown around and the cars were tipped over, and it smelled like gas.?

At an afternoon news conference, Gary Bird, the Moore fire chief, said that search dogs were no longer ?making any hits? at the school. He said no one had been found there Tuesday but cautioned that the search was still active.

?They will not declare that structure clear until they are down to the ground and have been through every piece of rubble in that building,? he said.

One child was killed at Briarwood Elementary School, elsewhere in Moore, said police Sgt. Jeremy Lewis. There was no word on how the ninth child died. Besides the 19 deaths in Moore, five were killed in southern neighborhoods of Oklahoma City.

Zac Woodcock salvages items from the rubble of a tornado-ravaged rental home in Moore.

Authorities said they hoped to have every home, business and car in Moore searched by nightfall. They worked under the threat of still more severe weather. Forecasters said parts of Oklahoma and Texas, including Dallas, were at risk for more tornadoes.

The tornado Monday spent 40 minutes on the ground, said Rick Smith of the National Weather Service.

?We?ve seen numerous structures that are wiped clean to the foundation,? he said.

Smith said that the first severe thunderstorm warning had gone out 44 minutes before the tornado touched down, and the first tornado warning 16 minutes ahead. The weather service said the storm, at its widest, stretched 1.3 miles.

President Barack Obama called it ?one of the most destructive tornadoes in history.? Speaking from the White House, he pledged the full help of the federal government and said there was no time to waste.

?In an instant, neighborhoods were destroyed, dozens of people lost their lives, many more were injured, and among the victims were young children trying to take shelter in the safest place they knew, their school,? he said. ?So our prayers are with the people of Oklahoma today.?

Fallin, after a helicopter tour that traced the tornado?s path, said searchers were having trouble because ?the streets are just gone. The signs are just gone.?

Expressions of grief and support came from across the world. Pope Francis said on Twitter: ?I am close to the families of all who died in the Oklahoma tornado, especially those who lost young children. Join me in praying for them.?

Queen Elizabeth II extended her deepest sympathies, and House Speaker John Boehner ordered flags at the Capitol to half-staff.

Relief efforts sprang up. The NBA?s Oklahoma City Thunder and its star player, Kevin Durant, each pledged $1 million. Others helped as they could: Miles from Moore, people went on Facebook to post family photos that had landed in their yards, hoping to match them with their owners.

Aerial pictures of the destruction brought to mind Joplin, the Missouri town virtually wiped off the map two years ago when an EF5 tornado killed 158 people and caused $2.8 billion in damage.

The twister cut a path similar to a tornado outbreak that ravaged Oklahoma and Kansas on May 3, 1999, killing 46 people and damaging or destroying more than 8,000 homes. Wind in that outbreak was clocked at 318 mph, the fastest ever recorded on earth.

Officials in Moore complained earlier this year about foot-dragging by the federal government over $2 million in federal grants for ?safe rooms? in 800 homes to protect them from severe weather.

A spokesman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency told NBC News the agency was looking into the claim.

The city?s website also said, however, that Moore faced only a 1 to 2 percent chance of a tornado on any spring day, and that if a tornado did strike, there was less than a 1 percent chance that it would be as strong as the 1999 tornado.

Monday?s storm beat those odds. Alfredo Corrales and Viviana Lune rode it out in a shelter beneath their house. Corrales told TODAY that they had hunkered down there and heard voices above, and popped open the door to find several neighbors asking to come in.

The wind was so strong, Corrales said, that he and a neighbor had to hold the cellar door shut. When they emerged, they found a rewritten landscape.

?I saw basically nothing,? Luna said. ?There were no fences there anymore, trees were snapped in half, roofs of houses were gone. Everything from people?s houses and even from neighborhoods across the street was laying in our yards. Half of the roof is torn off, the garage is caved in ? it's just a total mess.?

Brian Williams will anchor a special primetime hour live from Oklahoma with reports from Lester Holt, Ann Curry, Harry Smith and Kate Snow. Tune in tonight to NBC at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT.

96% Stories We Tell

All Critics (49) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (47) | Rotten (2)

Sarah Polley's documentary is a startling mixture of private memoir, public inquiry, and conjuring trick.

Polley was right to follow her instincts, though, in not attempting to tie everything up. She recognizes that family histories are necessarily contradictory, crazymaking, and essentially unfathomable.

What unfolds is a riveting drama that grows even more so as it plays out.

Don't be fooled by its deceptively simple title or the hesitant, unassuming way it begins. Writer-director Sarah Polley's "Stories We Tell" ends up an invigorating powerhouse of a personal documentary, adventurous and absolutely fascinating.

A brilliant, thought-provoking documentary.

A fascinating variant on the documentary form that examines what we see, and how we see it.

Polley imaginatively fills in the past through a hybrid of documentary and fiction [for] knowing relevance to oral history, testimonial evidence, and what makes a family.

What I can say is that the movie is dramatically compelling, journalistically fascinating, cinematically profound, and intellectually challenging.

Sheds fascinating light on Polley's art.

Polley mines her own life to strip naked the essence of storytelling, and what it is about folklore that makes it so essential in shaping our perceptions about who we are and where we come from.

Stories We Tell starts out as a simple investigation into the life of a mother that director Sarah Polley barely knew and slowly turns into a documentary that is as good as any movie you will see this year.

Where Polley's work goes from mere family movie to something much greater is in how she uses her own quest for answers to illuminate why & how we tell stories in the first place, especially in the form of film.

Polley's compassion and curiosity again mark her as both a heartfelt and unforgiving filmmaker.

Suspenseful, unpredictable, mature, tender and funny. A triumph.

The movie is convincingly built around the essential truth that we are ultimately defined by our loved ones' memories and perceptions.

A genre-twisting documentary with a fictional vibe that playfully bares the elusive truths about a family of storytellers.

Sarah Polley has blossomed as an actress and, more recently, as a daring and original filmmaker with an Oscar nomination to her credit.

Senators want fingerprint checks at airports

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senate supporters of far-reaching immigration legislation accepted minor changes in public while negotiating over more sweeping alterations in private Monday as they drove toward expected Judiciary Committee approval by mid-week.

The legislation would provide an opportunity of U.S. citizenship to millions of immigrants living in the country illegally, create a new visa program for low-skilled workers and permit a sizeable increase in the number of high-tech visas, at the same time it mandates new measures to crack down on future unlawful immigration.

In two previous weeks of deliberations, supporters of the legislation have demonstrated their command over the committee's proceedings, alternately accepting some proposals advanced by the bills critics and rejecting others ? all without losing a single showdown.

The same pattern held true as the committee embarked on its third and final week of drafting.

On a vote of 13-5, the legislation's supporters agreed to require foreigners leaving the country through any of the nation's 30 busiest airports to submit to fingerprinting, part of an attempt to strengthen security. The proposal was drafted by Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, who has yet to announce whether he will support the bill.

"This is an agreement that we need to build toward a biometric visa exit system," said Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz. He said the system is "long overdue." Most of the committee's Democrats supported the provision, along with four Republicans. Among them were GOP Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Flake of Arizona, two the so-called Gang of Eight that negotiated the bill's basic framework over many months.

The committee last week rejected a proposal by Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., to impose the fingerprinting requirement at all of the nation's airports rather than only the biggest. He said the system's partial implementation marked a "retreat from current law," which already requires a nationwide biometric system. The requirement has not been fulfilled because of the cost.

While the committee met, officials said a complex private negotiation was playing out over proposed changes to a section of the legislation that would expand the current cap on H-1B high skilled visas from 65,000 annually to 110,000, with the possibility of a further rise to 180,000.

Lawmakers, aides and lobbyists familiar with the talks said that Hatch, whose state of Utah is home to a burgeoning high tech industry, was seeking to ease the terms and costs that would apply to companies that make use of highly skilled immigrant workers.

In general, organized labor and its allies on the committee, including Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., wanted tougher conditions than industry was seeking, part of an attempt to assure than American workers are not disadvantaged by a larger influx of H1-B visa holders.

In an email issued during the afternoon, the AFL-CIO urged its supporters to contact the committee and express opposition to "Hatch's anti-worker amendments...

"Hatch's amendments would change the bill so high-tech companies can hire new immigrant employees without first making the jobs available to American workers," it said. "Hatch's amendments would mean American corporations could fire American workers in order to bring in new immigrant workers at lower wages."

A short while later, Hatch's spokesman, Matthew Harakal, said the Utah Republican is "encouraged with where discussions are headed and hopes that an agreement can be reached on something he can support."

One Senate official said two earlier stabs at compromise had failed, one when the high tech industry rebelled at the terms, and the other when the AFL-CIO balked. The officials who described the deliberations did so on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to speak on the record.

The bill's supporters are eager to strike a deal with Hatch, although officials say they would insist that he agree to vote for the legislation in committee if they made concessions he wanted.

Whatever the ultimate outcome of the negotiations, it seemed unlikely that the committee's vote would be the final vote on high tech visas ? or any other major portion of the measure.

"This bill is not perfect," Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. said at one point during the day, one of several occasions in the past two weeks he has signaled that he and other supporters will be receptive to some changes when the legislation reaches the Senate floor.

And in fact, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., arguably the Republican with the largest ability to sway the vote in the Senate, has said he wants to tighten the fingerprinting requirement that the committee accepted last week. "I will continue to fight to make the tracking of entries and exits include biometrics in the most effective system we can build when the bill is amended on the Senate floor," he said.

In other votes, the committee approved more visas for Tibetans and increased information sharing among federal agencies when people overstay their visas.

It also voted to strip asylum or refugee status from individuals who return to the country they fled, unless they can show a good reason for doing so.

Graham, R-S.C., said the asylum change was merited in light of the Boston Marathon bombings. The brothers who allegedly set off the bombs arrived in the U.S. as boys when their family sought asylum here.

'Apple of my Eye' star turns to first love: music

HONG KONG (AP) ? Fans know her as the sweet schoolgirl in the 2011 blockbuster "You Are the Apple of My Eye." Now, they can take a closer look at Michelle Chen through her first love: music.

After she graduated from the University of Southern California and returned home to Taiwan, her initial attempts to break into the island's music scene hit a brick wall. But trying acting at the advice of a talent manager, she landed a few film and television roles, then shot to stardom with "You Are the Apple of My Eye."

The 29-year-old actress said she poured her heart and soul into her first studio album, "Me Myself and I."

"It is really an album about me because I wrote most of the songs. I wrote the lyrics. And I wrote this album about my family and friends, my . maybe lovers," Chen told The Associated Press in a recent interview.

One song is written to her fans, and she says "I think the audience can really, really get to know who Michelle Chen is through the album."

Crediting the late Mandarin pop legend Teresa Teng as one of her major musical influences, Chen said she wrote one of the songs on the album as a tribute to Teng and also to a close family member who introduced her to Teng's music.

"Uncle Grandpa's Small City Story" is a tribute to the first pop song Chen listened to, Teng's "Small Town Story,'" because it was a favorite of Chen's great-uncle.

Chen sang part of "Small City Story" on her own song and says she was amazed while studying Teng's live performances.

"When I was trying how to sing that song, you will realize how much detail that she put into the song, like maybe in one sentence with three words, she has to make three different turns (vibrato three of four times)," Chen said. "No wonder she is like the diva of the century."

Some fans who were holding their breath to see how Chen would follow up her success on "You Are the Apple of My Eye" were surprised that she chose to switch gears and start fresh in music. Chen finds that both a burden and a blessing.

"It's very lucky because now people kind of know me already, so I get to have the chance to release my album and a lot of people will pay more attention to my album," she said.

But with every performance, "people seem to magnify everything I do." She said she hopes to look for the bright side. "I just hope that every time I try to sing, more people will hear that I can do it."

She's performing in China, Taiwan and Southeast Asia to promote the album.

At Friday?s break?fast, Git?tens stressed the cru?cial role parental involve?ment plays in helping chil?dren grow and suc?ceed. ?Parental engage?ment is what makes Healthy Kids, Healthy Futures suc?cessful and the work of ABCD Head Start suc?cessful,? he explained. ?It really is key to the future accom?plish?ments of your children.?

Rodriguez praised par?ents in atten?dance for helping ABCD Head Start rack up more than 5,000 hours of vol?un?teer ser?vice last year. She also empha?sized the impor?tance of devel?oping strong part?ner?ships with North?eastern and other local insti?tu?tions in an effort to make an impact in local communities.

?This is a true example of a suc?cessful part?ner?ship that serves fam?i?lies,? Rodriguez said. ?ABCD is extremely pleased with our involve?ment in the Healthy Kids, Healthy Futures part?ner?ship and the work we?ve accomplished.?

Here are some of the key features of Living Space:

Who Living Space is For

It?s for anyone who wants to improve their home.

Weber writes:

?These themes run through ?Living Space: Simple Steps to Transform Your Home. This book is
for everyone who wants to create the kind of house they long to come home to. It?s about giving you ideas and suggestions for creating the look and functionality you want in the quickest, easiest, most value-driven way.?

Why Living Space

Living Space helps you navigate the world of interior design.

In the Foreword, Richard Harzard writes:

?With an all-encompassing approach to home design ? ranging from room-specific decorating
strategies to ideas for addressing common stumbling blocks like clutter and pet management ?
?Living Space is a valuable resource for any homeowner who has been overwhelmed by the
prospect of tackling a redesign project. Kathryn is an able and entertaining guide, taking you
though home design room by room and step by step
. Her structured approach to design will
boost any nervous do-it-yourselfer?s confidence, and she overlooks nothing, even addressing
utility rooms and outdoor spaces. This book will be an invaluable tool as you navigate through
the world of interior design; it contains the information and insights you?ll need to create more beautiful, more personalized spaces.?

Your Home Needs to Reflect Your Spirit

Your home needs to reflect your personality and motivations.

Richard Harzard writes:

?But if you dig a little deeper, you?ll find that most successful designers play the role of therapist
for their clients. They ask questions and listen intently to their clients? answers. They take time to
truly understand their clients? personalities and motivations, because they know that the finished
home needs to be more than just beautiful; it needs to be an accurate reflection of the owner?s
spirit.?

Reflect You, Not Your Friends

Your remodeling efforts should reflect you, not your friends.

Richard Harzard writes:

?It?s perfectly relevant. When undertaking a home design project, it?s easy to become distracted by
how your friends and neighbors have styled their homes, the looks pushed by magazines and
catalogues, and your preconceived notions of how your home is ?supposed? to look. It?s
important to take a step back to honestly assess your needs and tastes, and remember that your
home should reflect your personality, not anyone else?s.?

Happy Home, Happy Life

A messy home creates a messy life.

Weber writes:

?Our homes need our attention because we?re in a relationship. There?s a saying that a parent is only as happy as his or her unhappiest child. And so it goes with our homes. When the house is a mess, we can?t think and we feel frustrated. When our homes, like our relationships, are lovingly tended to, we?re happy.?

Reinvigorate, Rejuvenate, and Offer Safe Harbor

Our homes need to provide intangibles beyond just shelter.

Weber writes:

?We need our homes to reinvigorate us, rejuvenate our lives, offer safe harbor and provide the kind of place worthy of the most important people and events in our lives. It?s the sweet, tender moments that make our homes more than four walls and a roof over our heads. They?re the repositories of our dreams, tears, laughter and love, and the places everyone wants to go back to.?

All Homes are a Work in Progress

There?s always ?room? for improvement.

Weber writes:
?My house is a work in progress. I find that most homes are. Even owners whose lavish homes are featured in magazines face the same problems everyone experiences ? from the dog chewing a costly oriental carpet to toys cascading through every room once little ones arrive. The only picture-perfect moment is when those pictures are taken. All homes, regardless of pedigree, need regular updates, maintenance, organization and repair.?

Boost Your Energy with Feng Shui

The feng shui of your home plays a key role in how you feel.

Weber writes:

?You could describe the way a home looks and feels as its feng shui. After all, feng shui is all about energy. What?s heartening is that routinely investing small amounts of time to maintain our homes brings peace of mind, enjoyment, pride, comfort, relaxation ? and a big energy boost.?

Simple Steps Over Slash and Burn

You can take small steps to make big changes to your home.

Weber writes:

?Maintaining a clean, beautiful, organized home is an act of love, but too often we try too hard,
adopting a slash-and-burn approach.? We think that acquiring more living space means we have to buy a new, larger house. The truth?? is that with careful organization, you can create all kinds of space you never knew you had. Even tending to simple maintenance issues can inspire a whole new love for your home.
A case in point is a home being prepared for sale. Once the house is decluttered, spruced up with a fresh coat of paint and re-landscaped, it suddenly looks great again. The owners find themselves falling back in love with a home that was once too cluttered, too run down, too small, too ugly. They also feel better about themselves!

Creating big changes in your home doesn?t have to be labor-intensive or financially draining. In fact, I find some of the most rewarding improvements are the simplest and least expensive, like drawer organizers for your kitchen tools, or rearranging the furniture in conversational groupings.?

Design a Better Home Office

As more entrepreneurs work from home, Weber provides some great advice on making sure your home office improves your productivity.

Weber writes:

?Not surprisingly, then, the home office has evolved well beyond a desk in the corner of the
bedroom where you type out a few e-mails. Dedicated rooms are now required to support
breadwinners and entrepreneurs alike. When they?re set up with an eye toward organization and
style, home offices make their users more comfortable, efficient and productive.
Too often, a home office is a mish-mash of furniture taken from other rooms in the house ? a
major mistake. Although most home offices aren?t used for client meetings or even intended for
outside visitors, that doesn?t mean they should be overly casual. In fact, a home office should
look like an office, not like a spare room simply being used as an office.
One of your first considerations when designing a home office is how you work. If you?ll be
looking at plans or preparing reports, then a wide-open workspace is critical. If you spend lots of
time on the computer, avoid the tendency to turn your desk toward the wall. While convenient
for using power outlets, this arrangement can make you feel boxed into a cubicle instead of an
office.?

Your Backsplash Should be Easy Installation, Low Cost, and Quick Cleanup

Your backsplash can be a blessing or a curse.? The worst mistake is to put up a backsplash behind the stove that is difficult to clean and maintain.

Weber writes:

?Even though adding a backsplash is a wonderful DIY project, you?ll soon regret it if you don?t pay close attention to practical matters such as whether the backsplash can be cleaned easily. Look for surfaces that allow fast and easy cleanup, especially if you?re adding a backsplash behind the stove. Grease splatters are next to impossible to remove from porous surfaces like unpolished marble or tile. Some of the easiest surfaces to clean are sealed tile, glass tile and stainless steel. Metal ceiling tiles with pressed designs have also gained notice for their ease of installation, low cost and quick cleanup.?

7 Ways to Create a More Interesting Ceiling

Weber shares 7 ways we can improve our ceilings of any height:

  1. Add crown molding. Molding is a wonderful way to add interest and make a room look more
finished. There?s even a crown molding with special corner pieces that allow you to join the ends
    without cutting special angles.
  2. Add beams. If you have tall ceilings, beams can be added easily. Go to websites such as
fauxwoodbeams.com to buy artificial beams that are lightweight and easy to install. Or,
make your own beams with rustic wood.
  3. Create a scene. Low ceilings can especially benefit from this technique. You can paint a faux
sky quickly and easily with some blue, white, and gray paint. Shaky with a brush? Buy sky
theme wallpaper instead. Draw or cut out a branch of a limb crossing the ceiling for a look that
reminds you of dozing under a tree. Apply inexpensive white lattice over your ceiling sky and
    you?ll think you?re outdoors in a gazebo.
  4. Get moldy. Apply small pieces of molding on the ceiling to create a pattern, such as a simple
strip of molding to frame the area around a chandelier. Or run molding about 12 inches in from
the wall. This type of molding can often be applied with glue; once it?s up, paint the inset of the
pattern to make the design stand out, or paint the outside of the molding.
Molding can also be added about six inches below crown molding on the wall. Painting the area
between the small molding and the crown molding the same color will make your crown
molding appear to be 8 or 10 inches deep. This is an inexpensive way to make crown molding
    look more substantial and expensive.
  5. Light up the night. Lighting is another way to add interest from above. Install crown molding
six inches down from the ceiling corner. Run rope lighting inside the crown molding. Have an
electrician install a plug at the top of the wall for the rope lighting and wire this to a switch. This
works well for tall and standard ceilings. In fact, in eight-foot ceilings, the lighting will make the
ceilings appear taller ? something really nice in an area where you?d like more space, such as
the dining room or living room.
  6. Get sconced. Sconces are terrific additions to any room because they add wall interest and
project light upwards. Because of this, they make standard ceilings appear taller.
  7. Add paint or wallpaper. Painting your ceiling a dramatic color creates interest quickly and
inexpensively. If your ceilings are low, paint them a dark color (such as blue, gray or green)
because these colors appear to recede. Good choices for high ceilings are bright or vibrant hues
such as orange, red, yellow or purple ? all colors that come forward.

Get Outdoor Furniture that Lasts Longer

If you?ve ever had furniture that?s rotted on you, you?ll appreciate Weber?s advice about choosing durable outdoor furniture.

Weber writes:

?If the furniture will be on a covered porch or veranda, shielded from the elements, there are more
choices available. Seating sets are available that include sofas and side chairs. Hammocks and
sling style seats are comfortable, but don?t hold up as well as traditional style chairs that only
need new pads every few years. Sling-style seats can also come out of the frame, rendering the
chair useless.
If swings, rockers and other wood furniture appeals to you, go with teak. This durable, long-lasting wood ages well and withstands sun and rain. Teak is expensive, however, and should be
considered an investment. Wicker is another option, and with newer styles available in resin, you
can have the wicker look without the upkeep. Resin pieces look nearly identical to the real thing
and come in a wide array of styles and colors.?

What more can I say? This book is a massive collection of insight and action. Use Living Space to make the most of the space you?ve got, and to create an arena that truly reflects you.

Chargers, Freeney agree to 2-year deal

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? The San Diego Chargers agreed Saturday to a two-year deal with aging star pass rusher Dwight Freeney that could be worth $13.35 million.

The deal to bring Freeney to the Chargers came four days after outside linebacker Melvin Ingram tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in a padless practice.

The addition of Freeney also helps cushion the loss of outside linebackers Antwan Barnes and Shaun Phillips to free agency.

"It's great to add a solid veteran who brings valuable experience to our defense," Chargers coach Mike McCoy said in the release announcing the deal. "His proven pass-rush ability is a perfect fit for our defense."

Freeney is 33 and entering his 12th season. He will make $5.25 million this season.

He was Indianapolis' career sacks leader with 107 ? but the Colts decided not to re-sign him in the offseason. After recording 13 ? sacks in 2009, his totals declined each of the past three years. He had five in 2012.

Freeney, a seven-time Pro Bowler, never seemed comfortable after moving from a 4-3 defensive end, where he spent his first 10 NFL seasons, to a 3-4 outside linebacker. The Chargers run a 3-4 defense.

Freeney was the 11th overall selection in the 2002 draft. During his time with the Colts, he combined with Robert Mathis to form one of the most fearsome pass-rush tandems in the league. His 44 forced fumbles are the most by any NFL player since 2002 and he was one of 13 players in Colts' history to participate in more than 100 victories.

Freeney led the NFL with 16 sacks in 2004.

Chargers rookie general manager Tom Telesco was with the Colts before being hired by San Diego in January.

Eva Longoria Wardrobe Malfunction Exposes Actress' Lower Half At Cannes (PHOTOS)

Things got a little wet and wild on the Cannes red carpet this weekend. A rainstorm hit the French fest on Saturday, presenting difficulties for arrivals at the "Jimmy P.: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian" premiere.

Eva Longoria experienced the weather's challenges firsthand, as the petite actress' dress dragged when she made her ascent to the red carpet. Eva's seafoam green Atelier Versace gown featured an open back and a dangerously high slit, two of the 38-year-old's frequent wardrobe preferences. As Eva made her way toward the theater, she hiked up her long skirt a tad too high, exposing far more upper thigh than intended. We should note, however, that Eva's risky maneuver was a relative success -- she didn't soil her hem in the rain, after all.

Eva's surely familiar with the perils of high slits and low necklines, as she had a wardrobe malfunction at the Golden Globes earlier this year, in a dress with a similar cut.

See photos of Longoria's soggy struggle below and click over to the Daily Mail for another photo of the malfunction.

NBC's 'The Voice' confirms Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton returning

By Jethro Nededog

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - The gang's back together!

NBC announced on Friday that pop diva Christina Aguilera and funk singer Cee Lo Green will be reuniting with pop star Adam Levine and country singer Blake Shelton for Season 5, as TheWrap was the first to report.

The network also said that Shakira and Usher are set to return on Season 6, which will air in midseason 2014.

"We locked in a plan several months ago to have the outstanding Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green rejoin Blake and Adam for cycle 5, and we're pleased to announce that the original four coaches are going to be back together in the fall," said president of alternative and late night programming Paul Telegdy in a statement.

"They're the reason this show was launched so strong for the first three cycles and we owe them a debt of gratitude. And after careful consideration of everyone's schedules for next spring, we are excited to be returning the current cycle of judges - Shakira and Usher along with Blake and Adam - for cycle 6, which will premiere after the Winter Olympics," he continued.

Green just inked his contract to return this week. Aguilera is set to return with a $12 million base salary with the potential to reach $17 million, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.

Aguilera took Season 4 off to focus on her "Lotus" album and tour. Meanwhile, Cee Lo Green took off to work on new music and his Las Vegas residency. They were replaced by Shakira and Usher on the current season.

"I am so thrilled that our 'Voice' family has grown from four coaches to six," said executive producer Mark Burnett.

"This show thrives on the ability of our coaches to continue to balance their enormous music careers with working on 'The Voice' to coach some of the best undiscovered talent in America," he continued. "The coaching panel of Christina, Cee Lo, Adam and Blake was at the heart of this show in its first three seasons and we are so lucky to have found equal success with Shakira and Usher in season four. Our best seasons are ahead of us."

"The Voice" has quickly risen to the top of the reality talent show ranks over its past four seasons. Last year, it took "Idol's" spot in the Emmy race, replacing it among the nominees in the Outstanding Reality Competition category.

In April, it reached a ratings milestone when its two installments took the top two slots for the week in both the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers for the first time in the series' history.

"The Voice" airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m./7c on NBC.

Vodafone Smart III is new own-branded budget offering

Vodafone Smart III

£95 up-front gets you Jelly Bean on a 4-inch screen

If you were wondering just how much smartphone you can get for under £100, Vodafone UK has your answer. The Vodafone Smart III is the latest entrant in the operator's Smart line, coming with mostly vanilla Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (despite the distinctly ICS-looking search bar) on a 4-inch WVGA screen. It's powered by an unnamed 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM, and packs 5-megapixel rear camera, so there's nothing too fancy going on under the hood. But it's an attractive enough design, and we always like to see more vanilla Android out there.

The Vodafone Smart III sells for £95 outright on PAYG, and is given away for free on contracts starting at £13 per month. The device is on sale now in black and white color options.

Fast and painless way to better mental arithmetic? Yes, there might actually be a way

May 16, 2013 ? In the future, if you want to improve your ability to manipulate numbers in your head, you might just plug yourself in. So say researchers who report in the Cell Press journal Current Biology on May 16 on studies of a harmless form of brain stimulation applied to an area known to be important for math ability.

"With just five days of cognitive training and noninvasive, painless brain stimulation, we were able to bring about long-lasting improvements in cognitive and brain functions," says Roi Cohen Kadosh of the University of Oxford.

Incredibly, the improvements held for a period of six months after training. No one knows exactly how this relatively new method of stimulation, called transcranial random noise stimulation (TRNS), works. But the researchers say the evidence suggests that it allows the brain to work more efficiently by making neurons fire more synchronously.

Cohen Kadosh and his colleagues had shown previously that another form of brain stimulation could make people better at learning and processing new numbers. But, he says, TRNS is even less perceptible to those receiving it. TRNS also has the potential to help even more people. That's because it has been shown to improve mental arithmetic -- the ability to add, subtract, or multiply a string of numbers in your head, for example -- not just new number learning. Mental arithmetic is a more complex and challenging task, which more than 20 percent of people struggle with.

Ultimately, Cohen Kadosh says, with better integration of neuroscience and education, this line of study could really help humans reach our cognitive potential in math and beyond. It might also be of particular help to those suffering with neurodegenerative illness, stroke, or learning difficulties.

"Maths is a highly complex cognitive faculty that is based on a myriad of different abilities," Cohen Kadosh says. "If we can enhance mathematics, therefore, there is a good chance that we will be able to enhance simpler cognitive functions."
