Raina fined for dissent at umpire's decision (Reuters)

BRIDGETOWN (Reuters) ? Indian batsman Suresh Raina has been fined 25 percent of his match fee for showing dissent at an umpire's decision during the first day of the second test against West Indies, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Wednesday.

Left-handed batsman Raina, who led India in the five-match ODI series against West Indies in the absence of regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, showed his displeasure after being given out caught off leg spinner Devendra Bishoo.

"What Suresh did was a clear breach of the code, something the player himself has accepted," ICC match referee Chris Broad was quoted as saying in an ICC statement.

"There is a fine line between showing disappointment at a dismissal and demonstrating dissent but on this occasion Suresh was well over that line and his behaviour was unacceptable."

Raina pleaded guilty and accepted the fine imposed on him after the end of play on Tuesday, the statement added.

New users can now get a free taste of the fantasy world beloved by hardcore fans.

Popular online role-playing game World of Warcraft (WoW) is to be offered free up to level 20.

Previously fans of the game, which has 11.4 million subscribers, had to pay a monthly fee of £8.99.

Under the new system, players will be able to build an unlimited number of characters but they will not be able to join guilds or accumulate more than ten gold coins.

The move is seen as a way of attracting new players to the game.

World of Warcraft is an online game in which players create characters, such as warriors, warlocks and shaman, who they then take on adventures to gather loot and items to make the avatars more powerful.

It is among the most successful of the so-called massively multi-player online games.

Blizzard Entertainment, maker of WoW, has previously offered free trials of the game but only for a limited number of days.

The free version will have no time restrictions.

Tim Edwards, editor of PC Gamer, estimates that it will offer someone new to the game around 10 to 15 hours of game-play.

"It is a really good offer and will allow people to get a flavour of the world," he said.

More and more companies are offering games for free as they aim to attract more PC owners to gaming.

"It is a free-to-play bonanza for gaming right now," said Mr Edwards.

"Team Fortress 2 went free over last weekend and it tripled its players overnight. If customers like the game it is pretty easy to get them to buy stuff," he said.

Users wishing to take advantage of the WoW free offer will still have to buy the base game, which costs around £10.

There are also three expansion packs for it.

Missy Elliott says Graves' disease not so grave (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Rap star Missy Elliott on Friday insisted her battle with the thyroid malady Graves' disease has not sidelined her career, a day after it was revealed that she has the ailment.

"I was diagnosed with Graves' disease about three years ago, but it really hasn't slowed me down at all," Elliott said in a written statement.

Elliott, who gained fame in the 1990s and whose hit songs include "Get Ur Freak On" and "Work It," has won four Grammys but has not released an album since 2005's "The Cookbook."

Some media reports on Thursday speculated that the long delay since her last album could be due to the illness, first diagnosed in 2008.

The 39 year-old Elliott talks about her Graves' disease in a taped interview for the VH1 cable show "Behind the Music" set to air on June 29. She describes how it shut down her nervous system and caused her hair to fall out.

But on Friday, Elliott said her condition has recently improved.

"Under my doctor's supervision, I've been off medication for about a year and I'm completely managing the condition through diet and exercise," she said.

Patients with Graves' disease have a thyroid gland that overproduces the hormone thyroxine, which can affect a person's appearance and energy level.

The disease is incurable, but symptoms can be handled with treatment, according to medical organization the Mayo Clinic.

Elliott said on Friday that, far from being inactive, she has since her diagnosis toured Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia and written and produced Grammy-nominated songs for Monica, Keyshia Cole and Jazmine Sullivan.

Elliott is working on an album tentatively titled "Block Party," with producer and rapper Timbaland.

Fields proceeded full bore with the project and on June 26, 1985, a gathering of 15,079 newcomers to this ancient sport welcomed pari-mutuel racing to Minnesota, nervously putting nearly $868,000 through the windows.

Canterbury Downs was officially part of the Minnesota sports landscape. "He loved it. He was so proud of it,'' Sarah said. "It was always so near and dear to his heart.''

What the early employees at Canterbury learned was that Fields did not recognize a class system in the building. "He treated everyone alike,'' Sarah recalled, "the valets, the jockeys, the people at the concession stands. He talked about everybody the same.''

Family members, friends and former colleagues will gather at Canterbury today to honor their friend, father, grandfather and husband in conjunction with the running of the $35,000 Brooks Fields Stakes. "We'll be well represented,'' said Sarah.

Fields had little knowledge of pari-mutuel racing when he undertook the project along with partners that included Santa Anita Race Track in California. His knowledge of horses was limited as well, although he was part of the last unit to go through horse cavalry school at Fort Riley, Kan.

Oh, and there were those trips to the Sonoran desert. "Growing up he was always taking us horseback riding in Arizona,'' Sarah recalled.

There was one another association with horses as well. "My father and mother went to London many years ago and bought some carousel horses,'' Sarah added.

"They came back with three ponies, two pokers and one big horse. The big one was at their place in Arizona. Every single grandchild was on that horse at one time or another.''

Fields was a people person and it is that legacy by which he is best recalled.

"People were his passion,'' Sarah added. "He loved people.''

They loved him back.

"He was truly humbled whenever anyone mentioned the track or thanked him for what he had done,'' she said.

Martha Fields died in 2001 and Fields later remarried, to a longtime friend of his and Martha's.

"He was so non-judgmental with people,'' said Lucy, his second wife. "He let people be themselves.''

Fields, of course, was known for his mind as well as his heart. "He was brilliant,'' Lucy said.

Smart enough to handle the rigors of Yale University and to learn the Chinese language well enough that he was used as an interpreter in China by the U.S. Army.
Fields died in June of 2008 at 89, a couple of weeks after attending the Brooks Fields Stakes. In his final days, it was Fields who expressed gratitude. "He felt blessed,'' Lucy said. "He said that he had had a wonderful life, had made more money than he could dream about, had two wonderful wives and wonderful children,'' Lucy said.

And friends wherever life took him.
Jockey agent Richard Grunder expressed his thanks to Fields at one time. Grunder shook his hand and said, "because of you I was able to raise my son, pay my bills and pay my mortgage.''

Fields inspired that kind of gratitude.

There was one other quality that stood above the rest, according to HBPA president Tom Metzen, who commented the day after Fields died.

"He was probably the most honorable man I ever met.''

Despite union vote on jobs deal, HFD rift with city remains

In a close vote, the Houston firefighters' union decided Saturday to ratify a three-year contract proposal from the city, saving the fire department from layoffs and closing a $10 million hole in the mayor's budget.

Union members passed the contract by a 1,560 to 1,391 vote.

The deal saves 236 firefighters from layoffs in 2012, but concessions include a two-year pay freeze and a 1 percent raise in 2014. Also under the agreement, the firefighters who leave the department will no longer receive their accrued time off paid in a lump sum, but instead spread over four years.

The ratification comes only a few days before the City Council is slated to approve Mayor Annise Parker's $1.8 billion budget.

Parker sought to reduce the fire department's $449 million budget by $17.7 million. Tense negotiations between the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association and the mayor on how to make those cuts have taken several months.

HPFFA President Jeff Caynon said in a prepared statement that although the union believes the deal was better than the city's first offer, the approval was difficult.

"As the close vote indicates, our members remain concerned about the Parker Administration's hostility toward firefighters," Caynon stated.

The new labor deal was constructed in May. Under the city's original offer, firefighters would receive no raises for the next two years, but a raise of 2 percent each in 2014, 2015 and 2016. The city also wanted the department to smooth out vacation scheduling by restricting how many firefighters can take time off during summer and holiday months, a time when the city pays millions of dollars in overtime to cover the shifts while so many employees are out. The union refused the package in part because they refused to give up current vacation polices.

Parker, who had to bridge a $75 million budget gap in a proposal that goes to City Council on Wednesday, said in a prepared statement that she was disappointed that the union's negotiators rejected a long-term agreement in favor of a short-term one "with little to offer either side." But she thanked the rank-and-file for helping the city in tough economic times.

"Their ratification of this new contract will prevent the layoff of any additional city employees and provide significant relief to help close the books on the budget for the coming fiscal year," she stated.

Both parties said they are glad to have reached a resolution and put negotiations behind them for this year.
