Windows: One of my pet peeves in Windows is when I update my graphics drivers or launch a new game and the screen resolution changes unexpectedly, moving all of my desktop icons into one corner. Icon Configuration Utility, a free Windows app, fixes that problem by saving the position of my desktop icons and makes restoring them a one-click operation.
Sure, you can just pin all of your regularly used programs to the taskbar if you're running Windows 7 and clear off your desktop, but for those of us who have more desktop icons (and real estate) than we have taskbar space, or for those people not running Windows 7, the Icon Configuration Utility is a lifesaver when updating graphics drivers or opening any app that wants to change the screen resolution.
After installing, the app will prompt you to save your current icon placement and give it a name. If you make changes to your placement, you'll have to save a new placement set, and you can do that just by right-clicking the desktop and clicking the ICU context menu. If an app changes your screen resolution or your icons get moved around, just fire up the app, select the last time you saved their placement, and hit restore to put them back where you want them. Icon Configuration Utility is free, portable, supports both 32 and 64-bit flavors of Windows, and is a great solution to an annoying problem.
