Art Education, Minas, Brazilian music, Jazz

Minas and Members? Show at Arts Education Center First Friday

Jazz fans have a treat in store on First Friday when Minas brings its distinctive Brazilian sound to the Adams County Arts Council?s Arts Education Center, 125 S. Washington St., Gettysburg, on November 2 at 7 p.m. for a free concert.? With an impressive grasp of the whole range of Brazilian musical idioms, Minas also incorporates American influences stemming from jazz, blues, folk and funk.

More than 60 Arts Council member artists are exhibiting a piece of work in the Second Annual Members? Show which also opens on First Friday November 2 at the center.? According to Program Coordinator Wendy Heiges, ?The show offers a dazzling array of paintings, photography, fiber art, jewelry, and pottery from many of the area?s finest artists.?? On display in The Studio is a photographic exhibit by Michael Rupp?s students at Fairfield High School, ?Using the Camera as a Creative Tool.?? The shows run through November 26.? First Friday hours begin at 5 p.m. and refreshments will be served.

Orlando Haddad and Patricia King formed Minas in 1978 at North Carolina School of the Arts to bring Brazilian music to stateside audiences. Built upon the duo?s multiple talents as vocalists, instrumentalists and composers, Minas is one of the most sought after Brazilian bands in the United States and has performed at the Lincoln Center and Kennedy Center.? Minas will be performing for students at Bermudian Springs Elementary, Fairfield Elementary, Conewago Valley Intermediate schools, and for the Arts Council?s after school program in an artist residency sponsored by Adams Electric Cooperative, Inc. and Touchstone Energy.?

Funding support for the Minas residency comes from PNC Bank, Liberty Mountain Resort, and Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour, a program developed and funded by the Heinz Endowments, the William Penn Foundation, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency, and The Pew Charitable Trusts, and administered by MidAtlantic Arts Foundation.
