Remotely Manage Servers with Windows Phone 7 (PC Magazine)

Microsoft last week announced the release of the Windows Server Solutions Phone Connector, an add-in that lets users connect to and manage Windows Home Server 2011, Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials, and Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials.

Connecting to a Windows server via Windows Phone 7 requires two components: the Windows Server Solutions phone application and the Windows Server Solutions Phone Connector add-in.

The Windows Server Solutions phone app, is of course, the Windows Phone 7 component. There are versions of this app for each of the supported servers: My Home Server for Windows Home Server, My Business Server for Small Business Server, and My Storage Server for Storage Server 2008 R2. The phone app is downloadable from the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace or from the Zune Markeplace right from the phone or PC. Users can find the app by searching for "My Home Server."

The second component; the Windows Server Solutions phone application, is downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center. It gets installed on the server you want to connect to with the phone. Server admins take note: the add-in has to be installed with administrative credentials if you want to connect to Small Business Server or you need to use the server password if connecting to Home Server or Storage Server.

There are also a few other pre-requisites. Remote Web Access has to be enabled on the server. In addition, the router on the network where the server resides must be set up so that Remote Web Access is accessible externally from the network. Users who don't have public-facing domains can use free third-level domain name services.

Why would anyone want to access their server from a phone? According to a blog post by Microsoft's Windows Home Server team, users can use their phones for server management tasks such as view alerts, manage users, and control backup jobs. With "appropriate permissions," users can also use their phones to view and access media file stored on the server, although the post did not specify what sort of permissions are needed.
