Cameron arrives at the White House

David Cameron and his wife Samantha arrived at the White House Wednesday for an official visit mixing talks on global threats with the formal flourishes of a state dinner.

President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle welcomed the British couple with full military and ceremonial honors on the south lawn of the presidential mansion on a unseasonable warm March morning.

The talks are likely to be dominated by the confrontation with Iran over its nuclear program, fears that NATO war strategy in Afghanistan may be unraveling and the failure to stop President Bashar al-Assad's crackdown in Syria.

Obama and Cameron will meet one-on-one in the Oval Office, hold talks with an expanded delegation and then give a joint press conference.

In the evening, Obama will lay on the pageantry of a state dinner for Cameron, designed to symbolize the friendship between the two men and enduring friendship and alliance between their two countries.

Cameron's visit is described as an official one and not a state one, as Britain's head of state, Queen Elizabeth II, who hosted Obama's visit to London last year, is not attending.
