Mahoning County commissioners cast symbolic early voting voteDemocratic county commissioners in Youngstown have cast a symbolic vote that defies Republican Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted?s ban on weekend early voting. The Mahoning county commissioners passed a resolution extending a building?s operating hours for three weekends in October to urge election officials to permit early voting. Commissioners, however, have no direct control over the board of elections, which has already agreed to follow Husted?s order that all county boards in Ohio have the same hours on weekdays and no hours on weekends. Husted suspended two Democratic board of elections members in western Ohio?s Montgomery County for scheduling weekend early voting hours.?

Ohio Senate campaigns continue to draw millions, though lopsidedOutside interest groups are continuing to pour money in to Ohio?s Senate race and it?s largely lopsided. The Chamber of Commerce and Crossroads GPS have spent nearly 12-million dollars combined in an effort to defeat Democratic incumbent Senator Sherrod Brown, and plan to spend nearly 7-million dollars more before November. In contrast, environmental, labor and political committees groups coming out against Republican challenger Josh Mandel including environmental, labor and political committees have spent a combined $3 million.?

Romney outraises Obama in OhioGOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney continues to out fundraise President Obama in Ohio.?Romney raised more than a half million dollars in Ohio last month, bringing his total to $4.4 million in Ohio to Mr. Obama?s $3.1 million for this campaign. Donors in Northeast Ohio have donated more than $1.5 million to Romney and more than $1.1?million to Mr. Obama total.

OSU medical center to pay $1.2 settlementOhio State University?s medical center will pay a Cleveland man?s family more than $1.2 million to settle a claim over a surgery that left the man in a vegetative state.?Theodis Jackson?s mother filed the complaint in 2010 that says her son suffered permanent brain damage from the surgery to treat testicular cancer. Jackson is now at a nursing home.

Executive tied to Fair Finance to pay $30,000A former executive tied to the collapse of Akron-based Fair Finance will pay $30,000 in a settlement. Terry Whitesell is the former president of Tim Durham?s Indianapolis-based parent corporation Obsidian Enterprises. He?s among dozens of people sued by Fair Finance bankruptcy trustee Brian Bash. A judge approved the $30,000 settlement ? Bash was originally seeking more than $225,000 form Whitesell, but agreed with Whitsell?s claims of insolvency. In June, Durham was convicted on all counts tied to what the feds say was a systematic looting of more than $200 million from more than five-thousand investors in Ohio.?

Prosecutors work to identify alleged vet scammerProsecutors are still trying to identify the man accused of running a massive scam that bilked Ohioans and others of hundreds of millions of dollars. At a pretrial hearing this week, prosecutors say the defense for the man known as Bobby Thompson has not responded to court motions seeking Thompson?s palm prints and samples of his handwriting and DNA. Authorities have been unable to identify him through finger prints. Thompson is accused of masquerading as a retired lieutenant commander and setting up a national network that collected as much as $100 million. nearly $2 million of that came from Ohioans. Prosecutors now say even his name was fictional.

Columbus schools beef up defense in attendence rigging scandalColumbus city schools will spend up to $100,000 to hire extra lawyers to help negotiate the ongoing investigation into rigging of attendance data to boost state report card numbers. The Columbus school board voted Tuesday night to retain an outside law firm for the investigation ? despite already having in-house attorneys. Columbus is one of three Ohio school districts targeted by state investigations into enrollment and attendance practices. The others are the Lockland School District in the Cincinnati area and Toledo Public Schools.
